Compound Bows Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy compound bows, right? No!

The left and right of things

It is an assumption that if you are right handed you will need a right hand bow and vice versa. Well! The thought is false. Get assessed by your coach and let him determine the kind of bow you will require. Some right-handers will need a left-handed while some will need a righ-handed. Also remember that it is mandatory that you are in good form. Being able to shoot accurately largely depends on how fit you are.

Performance specifications

When choosing, there are some specifications you will have to keep in mind in terms of the length and draw weight. The longer your bow, the more accurate your shot will be and this is great for target practice. A shorter one will be great for hunters. If you are a beginner then choose one between 3to 4inches.

PSE Surge

The PSE Surge Bow is a great buy because it is moderately priced but delivers top quality and power.

This single cam bow is very adjustable and powerful. It was designed to be used as a hunting bow and is ready to shoot right out of the box.

This is another selection that would be great for a beginner compound bow hunter. It is smooth and quiet while not being too difficult to master. Experienced archers will like this one if they are looking for a decent bow on a budget.

PSE Prophecy

With great features and a moderate price range, PSE made the Prophecy to be one of the fastest bows on the market. This single cam bow is like lightning.

This particular bow is something for bow enthusiasts to get excited about. It is super fast and really packs a punch. This is a bargain for the money as it gives you all you could ask for from a moderately priced bow.

Not your starting compound bow, but it’s the next step up. It is super fast and really packs a punch. This is a bargain for the price as it gives you all you could ask for from a moderately priced bow.

Sure there’s a bit of a kick and some vibration to this bow, but that’s nothing a solid stabilizer can’t fix. Upgrades are your friend, but you won’t need too many with the PSE Prophecy.

Draw Weight

The draw weight is the amount of force that it takes to draw back the bow and is measured in weight. The weight will increase as muscles become conditioned to shooting the bow. Start with a lower weight and work your way up as needed.

Some bows are adjustable to grow with you as your draw weight increases. A greater draw weight will increase velocity to the arrow and it is advised to hunt with a higher draw weight.

Let Off

The let off is the point during the draw when the weight on the string decreases at a given percentage of the total draw. Once the let off engages, the archer can take their time aiming. The full amount of effort is required up until the let off point.

The percentage is usually between 60% and 75%. This is helpful especially when hunting. If you have to pause to track the animal then you will be able to hold your draw until you are ready to shoot.

All things being considered, these are the most important technical considerations when you are shopping for a compound bow.

While they are primarily a Crossbow based manufacturer, they also produce a few compound bows such as the Hunter Vortex for youth archery. They have a team of engineers who actively develop new crossbows and migrate some of that technology to compound bow products.

Know The Components

You should know what all of the parts are that make up a compound bow.

This is important whether you are buying one online or at your local hunting shop. Some bows don’t have features that others do, which could make your shooting experience better or worse.

Here is a short list of the components with a diagram for illustration purposes:

Noise is a common problem for bow hunters. The sound of the strings vibrating after a shot can, and will, spook most game animals. There are string silencers available to help combat this. The way the arrow slides from the bow can cause a tremendous amount of noise. Are your cams noisy? Do the joints creak when you are going in to a fully drawn position? There are mechanisms to reduce and eliminate most noises.

Cheap vs. Expensive

Not only should have you a budget in mind, you should also understand the price range of any particular bow. You also need to know exactly what you intend to use the bow for. Are you using it for competition, hunting, or once in a while target practice?

The most expensive or a cheap compound bow isn’t always the best or the worst bow either. Further up on this page, you can see how important draw lengths and weights will affect an archer.

Some bows are simply more expensive because of branding or small features that some archers will never use. In the case with someone new to the sport, they will overlook these small features and the extra cost will simply be wasted, in which case buying a cheaper one would make more sense. (more on this below).

Local Shops

Buying at a local shop may be more beneficial than just being able to take the bow home right away. Often local sellers will be more keen on giving you a sale or discount on a bow simply because they understand that you will go back to them to buy upgrades and other accessories.

Local shops dedicated to archery sales have people to talk to who have a lot of experience. If you already know what type of bow you want, you may try asking the shop what they recommend for your skill level and intention.

At the very least, you can go to a shop to get fitted for a bow size and check out the latest brands before going for buying the best compound bow on the market online, as there are times when ordering online might be more beneficial than paying at your local shop.

You can tune or adjust your bow release the way you want it. It’s critical to get an easy-to-adjust release to adhere to your posture and shooting. The bow release should be smooth and won’t change tensions once you let go of the string.

Local Pro Shop

Archery shops, like fishing shops, are a great place to learn, hang out, and purchase equipment at. Yes, you can probably find it cheaper online. But if the shop owner, staff, and patrons are knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly, consider spending a few more bucks on an accessory item to keep them in business. Most pro shop staff members worth their salt will be able to fit you to a bow that will be both comfortable, ergonomic, and optimal for your body size and strength. Many shops also sell used bows or consign them for their customers. You can find a great deal this way, as most shops will throw in a free -, strings, arrows, etc with a deal. See what you find.

All that power but no way to aim sounds like a big waste to me. Accuracy is achieved through proper form, good sights, quality arrow rest, and a properly set up bow. The last are things you can pay for up front, but proper form must be learned over time. Invest in a good quality 3-pin sight (Apex, Cobra, Tru-Glo, Sword)  a good quality on market arrow rest (WhiskerBiscuit, Trophy Ridge), and proper setup done by your pro shop.

Power and Accuracy

Other than stealth the most important considerations when looking for a compound bow are power and accuracy.

The best compound bows are capable of exceeding 300 fps and as long as you can find a bow with this kind of power in your price range this is what you should be setting as your guideline.

Of course power is of no use if you don’t have an accurate shot and that’s why it’s important to find a bow with a smooth and straight release as well.

Draw Length and Weight

There is no perfect draw length and weight as that depends on your own physical make up, but the best compound bows allow you to adjust the draw weight and length.

Ideally you should be looking for a bow that allows you to adjust the draw length somewhere between 1and 3inches and the draw weight between 30 and 70lbs.

Shock and Vibration

Shock and vibration are two things that can significantly affect the accuracy of your shot.

High quality compound bows virtually eliminate these problems and allow you to take a smooth and accurate shot every time. This is usually achieved by installing shock absorbing materials that soak up the vibrations and allow you to achieve the best shot possible.

Excessive vibration can also be hard on the body so this is another advantage of choosing a compound bow with good shock absorbing qualities.

Compound bows can be made from a couple of different materials. Some kind of aluminum alloy is more common, but carbon fibre is sometimes used on more expensive models.

The advantage of carbon fibre is that it’s much lighter and also extremely strong. Aluminum alloy is still used in many top quality bows as it’s also a top quality material that’s fairly light weight as well.

Draw length

The compound bow will draw a certain distance before the string stops. This amount of distance is referred to as the draw length. Most models feature a range of draw length so that they can be adjusted to fit the user for a more comfortable form when shooting. It’s crucial that the user finds the appropriate draw length for many reasons.

If the length is too long, the user will naturally end up leaning back in an attempt to properly see through the peep site. This can cause many problems such as poor posture and poor shooting form. The wrong shooting form will only add torque and tension to the bow, which again, will lead to inaccuracy. And even worse, this will probably cause the user’s bow arm to extend too far, placing the inner elbow in the path of the string.

The bow length will be measured from axle to axle. While there is no set length, a hunting bow is usually shot at about thirty inches. A bow used for target shooting will be much longer.

For the beginning archer, we recommend visiting a Bass Pro Shop’s archery department to get measured for the appropriate draw length. Using the correct length will improve your form, accuracy, shot consistency and most importantly, safety.

The modern compound bow is able to shoot upwards of 350 feet per second. A bow that’s able to shoot heavy arrows at faster speeds offers the potential for greater penetration, which is crucial for the hunter. A faster arrow will also shoot flatter, working to improve downrange accuracy.

Noise will also be important to hunters. A bow that is quiet is preferred over a loud one. When you shoot a bow, the energy stored in its working components will be transferred to the arrow. However, some of the energy is lost as vibration. This can result in a loud sound with each shot you take. But thanks to advances in compound bow design, the energy loss is usually minimal. A vibration dampener is an accessory you can buy that also works to absorb any type of leftover vibration.

For the beginner, it’s important to understand the difference between the ready to shoot models and the bare bow. A compound bow is made to use accessories when shooting. Common accessories include a quiver, sight, and arrow rest. Ready to shoot models that are sold as starter packages will have these accessories already installed on the bow.  If you purchase a bare bow, then you’ll need to purchase these accessories separately.  Either way will work fine, just keep in mind that a bare bow requires some additional work and cash before you can take it out shooting.

The Riser

The handle portion of the bow is referred to as the riser. Risers are available in a wide variety of materials, designs, and shapes. Their design and construction will greatly influence the price, performance, and function of the bow. Just like cams, each type of riser will feature many subtle differences, but there are currently three main styles to choose from: straight, deflex, and reflex.

Reflex style risers can be spotted easily. This style curves away from the natural curvature of the limbs. This type produces a faster speed as it works to reduce a bow’s brace height. Most new compound bows will feature a reflex style riser.

The exact opposite of the reflex riser is the deflex riser. This style will follow the curvature of the limbs instead of curving away from it. This will work to increase brace height and can also create slower arrow speed. This style of a riser is more forgiving to shoot and definitely more accurate. They’re also the least common type of riser to use on modern compound bows that are used primarily for hunting.

The straight riser will fall somewhere in between the reflex and deflex styles. Straight risers are technically reflex risers, but they feature a less extreme curvature. They’re also reasonably forgiving and fast. However, like the deflex riser, straight riser models have pretty much disappeared from the bow world.

The materials used for a riser, as well as the size and weight, will affect the bow’s cost. However, it doesn’t really affect the longevity, accuracy, and performance of the bow. There are a couple of common ways that risers are constructed: machined and cast. Some risers are also made from a lightweight carbon fiber, however, these are not very common.

The cast riser is just as reliable, accurate and strong as machined risers, and are usually available for a fraction of the cost. But their weight and size can be a big disadvantage. Cast risers often feature a thicker grip section and are heavier than machined risers.

Off all the riser styles, machined risers are the lightest. These risers feature a smaller grip that will usually fit most hands better compared to a cast riser. However, this style is also pretty expensive to produce.

How To Determine Your Draw Length

Just make sure that you are able to pull the string back to anchor properly (see the image below)! This is really important because if the draw length of the compound is too short you will not be able to shoot with proper form!

What Is Let Off

First multiply Draw Weight (70 lbs) with Let Off (65%): 70*0,6= 45.(that means 65% of 70 lbs are 4lbs)

65% let off is wider than 80% let off. For starting out, models with wider let offs will do better as they make learning to shoot with proper form easier because they give you more room for aiming before pulling forward again. All in all compounds with a wider let-off (for example 65%) are more comfortable to shoot than models with lower let offs (think 80%). Most of the models available today have a let-off around 65% which seems to have become the standard.

The Choice

For every archer, buying a compound bow will be an individual experience shaped by personal shooting style and skill level. While there are numerous factors that go into choosing the right compound bow for your particular needs, there are some guidelines that will help jump start your search.

There are advantages and disadvantages of solid vs. split limb bows, none of which can be proven or dis-proven.

Barnett Tomcat Youth Set

The Barnett Tomcat Youth Set offers a design for beginning shooters. It has a very short range for adjustments, just 20-2inch draw length, making this a good bow for younger archers 4-years of age. It is available only in a right-hand version, 20 pound draw weight, and has a 70 percent let-off rating.

The bow features a rounded-cam which not only makes shooting easier it is gentler on the fingers. It offers a fiber optic sight that features a three-pin design so aiming, and target practice becomes easier, and the archer can better concentrate on form rather than finding the target.

The straightforward operation makes this a great bow for first-time archers, and many of the online reviews praise the bow for that aspect. The easy use means kids can learn the basics easier and while getting used to a quality bow.

Drawing Weight

Drawing weight is an essential factor to ensure it the required amount. Drawing weight is the key controller of speed, distance and the rate of penetration. The higher the weight the high the rate of speed, longest distances and high penetration for bigger preys

Range Of Drawing Weight

This bow type is made in such a way that it can fit a range of drawing weights. This makes is suitable for long distance shooting accuracy, killing small, medium and large preys. The hunter has a wide range of prey to shoot and kill hence a better hunting outcome.

Additional Attached Product

This bow model is customer-favoring as it has additional fitting in it such as two 30″hard aluminum arrows the arrows are well made to oppose any wind opposition and are hard to break other additional features are fiber optic sight, releasing aid D-shaped string loop

Two different colors

The bow is available in two different finish that is the black and autumn camo. The hunter can choose from the two different finish graphics hence color tastes is enhanced. These colors are not bright hence the hunter can hide from the prey without being seen.

Durable Material

The bow is made up of durable making materials which last long for the hunter to have a long lasting period and also value for money. The making materials are either aluminum alloy or even carbon which are not breakable and can counter any pressure against it

Right And Left Handed

Hunter may vary from which hand they use and is the most strong. Having in mind this factor the manufacturer has put measure to ensure that all left and right handed people have a chance of using the bow. The bow is made separately each consisting of either right and left hand and eye viewing.

Accurate And Efficient

This bow type is well balanced and stable thus giving the hunter high level of comfort thus he/she accurately shots the prey keeping in mind that only the aimed prey are well hit. The bow is efficient are it gives the hunter service and also value for his or her initial capital

ATROPOS-10Black /Camo Archery Hunting Compound Bow

This model is the newest in available market. I have tried it and its working as it has a new and distinguished design.

High Speed

For accurate killing shot, you need to have a fast moving arrow so as not to alert the prey. The bow has a fast speed of 3fps this is a high arrow speed. This high speed does not provide any area for vibration hence big catches are maintained

Aluminum Riser

For ensured durability, the bow is made up an aluminum riser which is much stable than any other making material. The aluminum riser is well fitted in the bow to ensure that the hunter is not distracted by any external pressure that may arise.

Choosing Your Peep Sight

The peep sight serves the same purpose as the rear sight of a gun. The peep sight is a small, donut-shaped ring installed in the bow’s string. To aim, look through the peep sight hole when are you at full draw, and locate the front sight in the field of view. From here, place the pin on the intended target.

There are three different types of apertures for peep sights. They all have their pros and their cons, but most people choose the medium size because it gives them the best of both worlds. The smallest peep sight is 1/16” which gives the hunter or competitor the most accuracy, but challenging visibility. The medium size is 1/8” which provides good aim and is also easier to see through. The 3/16” has the most visibility, but is the worst for aiming.

ATA Length and Weight

For hunting, the axle to axle length should be less than 3inches and lighter than 4.pounds. Since you will be carrying the bow while you’re hunting, and might need to maneuver it in the bush or in a tree stand, compact sizes and lighter weight options will be a lot easier to handle.

Product features

If there is a diamond archery infinite edge pro bow is available in your hand there is no reason to spend your money buying other bows. This compound bow is very suitable for a beginner. The beginner can get benefit from the beginning when they are learning proper shooting. This bow price is very affordable for anyone. But in this bow have some advanced features so that advanced shooter can shoot with this.

Speed and Noise

Common among archers is talk about speed and noise. Modern bows are capable of shooting upwards of 350 feet-per-second or more. Arrow speed is important because it also translates to kinetic energy, or knock-down power. Bows able to shoot heavy arrows at fast speeds will provide greater penetration potential, which is desired when hunting. Faster arrows also shoot flatter, which aids in downrange accuracy.

You can get started quickly

You have enough money left to buy a higher-quality bow down the road

Most of the best compound bows will cost you R000 but there are a few models of exceptional quality that cost less than R000.
