The first way of performing dips we want to discuss is what are known as triceps dips. TO perform this exercise, grip the two handles or bars of the dip machine or station and get into the starting position of your arms being fully extended with your body raised above the bars and legs bent and crossed. You then need to lower your body until your elbows bent into 90 degree angles before you raise your body back up to the position where you started.

The primary muscle worked when you perform triceps dips is the triceps muscle to the back of your upper arm. Fitness Reality X-Class High Capacity Power Tower. Bit of a mouthful to pronounce! If you are going to get a power tower, get one that’s sturdy and doesn’t shake around. This one is quite a big investment but the cheaper ones are infuriatingly flimsy. In my opinion, you should put the money towards a good power rack that you can do pullups on instead, and then buy some parallel bar or a dips attachment, if available.

I think this is the only way to train your shoulders for mass on dip stations, but it’s considered calisthenics as you can do it just like other exercises with your body weight. Keep in mind that this exercise is hard, and you need to train for some moves before being able to perform it correctly.

The Perfect Fitness Multi-Gym Pro, the company’s newer version of our previous pick, hits all the high notes of its predecessor. Like the others we tested, it has multiple grip options—for narrow, neutral, and wide handholds—the last of which are cleverly integrated into the crossbar that rests on the doorframe, a feature not found on any other unit we tested. Even smarter, the rectangular doorframe supports make greater contact with the woodwork or wall than the competitors’ cylindrical bars and are therefore less likely to mar your home. The wide-grip handle position also erases any elbow room issues that could arise during a wide pull-up because the arms are in front of, rather than within, the doorframe, and they are also low-profile; others with grips this wide projected farther out from the unit, expanding the footprint dramatically. Like most of the field, save one, the Multi-Gym Pro is weight-rated up to 300 pounds, which should make heavier people feel more secure, despite a slight sag upon initial grip from the compression of the foam. It also has actually straightforward instructions (many others did not), with a couple of assembly options to better fit various moldings and doorways up to 3inches wide, and is one of only three that offered any assembly variation to account for woodwork. Pull-ups provide a simple (but not easy) and effective way to increase strength and coordination across multiple joints and muscle groups. Pulling, as a movement pattern for the fitness of the body, is essential for targeting the posterior muscles of the back and shoulders, and is more challenging to create in a body-weight training program than its front-of-body partner, pushing. Therefore, doorway-frame pull-up bars are a relatively inexpensive piece of equipment that makes well-rounded functional fitness accessible at home.

To see how the bars worked for people of different sizes, we asked a large male trainer to work out with us. He and I hung from each bar, noting if we experienced any initial bowing or sagging, and if we had to bend our knees to get off the ground. Both of us did a minimum of two pull-ups from each grip on every bar, rating each one’s variety, placement, and comfort, including whether there were any elbow-room issues on the way up or down.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
Those wide grips are really too wide for narrow-shouldered people—when you do a wide pull-up, your hands should be just outside of your shoulders. On the Multi-Gym Pro, hands would be better placed just inside from the wide handles, on the one part of the bar that’s (somewhat inexplicably) lacking a foam covering. That said, they should be fine for most adults and many teens who are larger people.
Slightly smaller and similarly priced to our Stamina pick for smaller people, the Perfect Fitness Multi-Gym Sport is a solid basic option if you prefer a higher, 300-pound weight rating. That said, its grips offer among the least variety, and the wide ones may not be wide enough for broader shoulders (whose owners may be among those who’d prefer that higher weight rating).
The Easy Effort Doorway Pullup Bar Universal Door Mount (UD-6) has neutral grips on one set of L support bars that come under the doorframe. The whole thing cants forward and down at an odd angle, and it costs nearly double most of our other picks.
The Iron Gym Total Upper Body Workout Bar: Extreme Edition sagged a bit under an 185-pound user. Setup is also comparatively difficult since it comes with picture-only instructions. Customers also complain about black scuffing from the black foam pad, and that the padding deteriorates.
The Stamina Boulder Fit Door Gym’s screws and bolts were difficult to align in the holes. Stamina also claims that the bar works on doors from 2to 3inches wide, but when we put the unit on a 28-inch door, we immediately noticed that the end of two cylinder crossbars pushed into the doorframe molding. The black plastic crossbar that sits on the interior, top doorframe molding wouldn’t sit flush against the wall and down on the molding.
The Pro-Grade 12-grip position bar sold by Beachbody was one of our least favorites, because it didn’t work on any of our doors (and we’re not the only ones, apparently). Its safety feature also requires drilling into the drywall over the interior door, top-molding mount position.
The Wacces 3-in-Fitness Bar looks and works just like the Iron Gym Total Upper Body Gym basic unit, but reviews complained that it didn’t necessarily fit doors as advertised (from 2to 3inches).
The GoFit Elevated Chin Up Station was rated for larger doorframes (3inches and larger, which is on the wider end of your typical interior door width), but with the way leverage worked on these units, it appeared this one would be hard on a doorframe. This customer attests to that being the case.
We disqualified Yes4All Deluxe Chin-Up Bar after just looking at the rubber supports that sit on the right and left molding because they scuff or dig your doorframe (even user reviewers who like this unit otherwise concede this con). People who buffer those right and left supports with fabric or carpet seem to be very happy with use, but again, we didn’t want to recommend a product that needed home modification.
Big Mike’s Fitness 3-in-Door Gym and its slightly more expensive “deluxe” version are a lot like the Iron Gym Basic and Iron Gym Extreme models, but they are pricier.

Healthier Land included this model on its list of the top pull-up bars because it’s heavy duty, affordable, and can hold up to 300 pounds. However, the reviewer didn’t like that there was drilling involved for installation. four- or five-star rating
Assisted dip machine
Set the weight stack to the desired level; the more weight used, the more assistance provided. Grasp the handles, extend your arms and kneel on to the sliding platform. Lower your body by bending your arms until your elbows are at 90° before returning to the starting position.
Perform the conventional dip technique with weight added to your body. I prefer using a dip belt to add weight. But you can also hold a dumbbell between your ankles, wear a weighted vest, fill a back pack with weights or even wear heavy chains.
Get two resistance bands. Attach one end of each band to opposite sides of the dip station. Then loop left band over the right side of your neck, and the right band over the left side of your neck. The bands should cross on the front side of your body, as well as on your back. Proceed to execute a set of dips.
Dip to leg raise
Perform a conventional dip, but bring your legs up at the top of the motion. So, your legs should be parallel to the floor when your elbows are fully extended. Hold this position briefly, lower your legs and then dip down. This makes the upper body muscles work harder, while also adding an intense abs workout into the mix.
Elevate yourself onto the dip bars, with elbows extended. Dip down and to the left, shifting most of your weight onto your left triceps/shoulder/chest. Then push back up to the starting position, again relying mostly on your left side. Repeat for the right side. You can alternate sides every rep. Or you can do one set all on one side, and the next set all on the other side.
Ring dips: Get a pair of gymnastic rings and hang them up on something sturdy (e.g. ceiling beams, a solid power rack). Grasp the handles with an approximately neutral grip (palms toward each other). Hoist yourself off the floor and into the starting position by extending your arms. Dip down by bending your arms until your elbows are at 90°. Press back up to the starting position, and repeat.
Supinated grip dips
This is the exact same as a pronated grip dip (see above), except the grip is reversed: you use a supinated (underhand) grip to hold onto the bar.
Reverse Grip Gironda dips: This is the same as Gironda dips (see above), with two exceptions: you grasp the bars with your palms facing out and your elbows flare more. This should only be done by people with very flexible shoulders and wrists.
One arm dips
Get on a pull up bar, and hoist yourself up, such that your torso is above the bar and both arms are extended. Remove one arm from the bar and slowly lower yourself until your upper arm is parallel to the floor. You will have to lean your torso forward and flare your elbow out to the side, in order to balance as you dip down. Once at the bottom, reverse directions, extending your arm until straight. As shown in the image below, you can move your legs and your other arm to help you balance as dip up and down. A good progression for working your way up to the one arm dip is the one arm wall dips, as shown in this video.
Whip of the Bar
The “whip” is the common term for the ends of the bar bouncing at the end of a repetition, or a phase of a lift. The lifter will be stationary, but the ends of the bar will be moving.
Experienced lifters can use this during certain transitions in their lifts. For example, between the clean and jerk they can bounce the bar off their chest and propel the bar up by using the momentum of the bend coming upward into the jerk position.
The main factors in determining the amount of whip are the material from which the bar is made, and the diameter of the bar.
The thickness of the plates can also effect the whip that the user can generate. For example, bumper plates, spreading the load on the collar of the bar, will make the bar behave in a completely different to the way it will behave with calibrated weight plates, which take up less collar space.
Knurling is made from two sets of diagonal grooves cut into the barbell, usually going in opposite directions. This forms tiny diamond shapes, which dig into the skin on your hands when you hold the bar and assist with grip.
The width and depth of these grooves will determine how “aggressive” the knurling is on the barbell.
More aggressive knurling is primarily to assist with heavy deadlifts, where grip failure is the most likely.
The further in the knurling comes, the narrower you can effectively grip the bar. Weight lifting bars designed for powerlifting tend to have more knurling towards the centre of the bar for the use of sumo lifters who grip inside of what would be a normal grip for a conventional deadlift or clean.
A portion of knurling in the centre of the bar (known as central knurling) helps with grip on your back during squats. Both IWF (International Weightlifting Federation) and the IPF (International Powerlifting Federation) specify that a men’s barbell should have this.
Some specialised squat bars have a very wide central knurling to allow for use by larger men.
As mentioned earlier, the knurling is less aggressive on men’s Olympic bars, as when they catch a clean they don’t want aggressive knurling at the neck, but it is still there to assist with squats.
A woman’s weight lifting bar has no centre knurling. If central knurling is required during squats then using a male bar is preferable. The wider bar will also make squatting more comfortable on the upper back.
Olympic Weight Lifting Bars
Olympic weight lifting barbells are designed for the two main Olympic lifts – the snatch, and clean & jerk.
Olympic bars are usually smaller in diameter, but only by 1mm. However, this makes a difference to your grip strength.
The knurling on Olympic weight lifting bars is not as aggressive as other weight lifting bars. There must be enough to provide a good grip, but not so much that it rips your hands apart when the bar spins in your hand during the catch phases of the lifts.
Knurling is marked out for the snatch lift and is further apart than a power bar which is marked out for the bench press.
Olympic bars also require collars that spin. The spin on the bar deadens the rotational force of the barbell during the pull and catch phases of an Olympic lift (during snatch and clean) or the dip and drive (jerk or push press) reducing the impact on your wrists and shoulders.
Olympic bars also require more bend and flexibility. This is sometimes called the whip (stored elastic energy), which helps during the initial pull and catch phase of the lift to avoid unnecessary damage to your collarbones.
Bars which have achieved IWF accreditation are widely recognised as the best on the market (with the most accurate tolerance in relation to the bar’s weight) and only these types of bar are sanctioned for use in international competition. View IWF accredited bars.
Weight lifting barbells for powerlifting are designed for the big three lifting exercises: Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift.
Knurling on powerlifting bars is much more aggressive to help the lifter grip the bar during heavier attempts.
The knurling comes in further than an Olympic bar to allow for narrower grips during deadlifts and a more secure squat.
Powerlifting barbells are rigid, stiff bars, and therefore do not deform, when compared to Olympic bars, under load (or whip). This means they would be a poor choice for Olympic Lifts – you will feel the difference if you catch a clean slightly wrong with a power bar. It sometimes feels like your collar bones have been hit with a sledgehammer!
Specialised deadlifting bars are available that are longer and have more whip. This means the end plates are left on the ground for longer, which allows the lifter to get into a stronger position before the full load comes off the floor.
Hybrid, Training & Multipurpose Weight Lifting Bars
Hybrid weightlifting bars are useful for gyms, CrossFit boxes and facilities that offer both Olympic weight lifting and Powerlifting.
Hybrid weight lifting barbells are great for beginner and intermediate weight lifters as they have the characteristics of both a powerlifting and Olympic weight lifting bar.
Hybrid barbells usually have two sets of fine knurling markings to accommodate for both Olympic lifting and power lifting standards.
Hex Trap Bar
The Hex Bar (or Trap bar) is an interesting barbell variation that is most commonly used in the gym for deadlifting as an alternative to the traditional straight bar deadlift. Many people prefer the trap bar deadlift because due to the load being placed in line with the user rather than off centre it puts less stress on the lumbar curve especially at the start of the movement. This makes it a common choice for users with back issues. Hex bars are normally 6ft or 7ft long and weigh around 25kg and 30kg respectively.
The EZ Curl bar is a shorter barbell variation which tends to be quite light weight and has a distinctive jagged shape. The advantages of this type of bar tend to be felt by users who experience discomfort in their wrists when using a straight bar for curls (the angle of the EZ Curl bar lets them grip the bar in a more natural position).
Fixed barbells are more commonly found in a health club, high street gym setting than in any sports performance, weightlifting or powerlifting facility. These are a durable convenience item that doesn’t require any set-up time like adding collars or plates. Fixed barbells are generally around 110mm long and range in weights from 5kg up to 45kg.
Bluetooth and wireless streaming
Features and inputs are overrated on sound bars, with one big exception: built-in music streaming.
Bluetooth is the easiest way to wirelessly stream audio from your smartphone or tablet. It works with the music stored on your phone and any music app (think Pandora), plus it’s platform-agnostic — nearly all iOS, Android and Windows phones and tablets have built-in Bluetooth. If your music experience these days revolves around your phone, you really want built-in Bluetooth in your sound bar.
While it’s possible to add Bluetooth later with an adapter, it’s not an ideal solution.

Do I need to use the remote that comes with the sound bar?
While most sound bars include a remote, they’re pretty crummy quality, and most manufacturers instead rely on you to program the sound bar to respond to commands from your TV’s remote.
In theory, it’s not a bad idea: nobody wants another remote to deal with. In practice, it’s sometimes more problematic. After you disable your TV’s internal speakers, some televisions display an annoying status message whenever they receive volume remote commands, which will happen if you’re using your TV remote to control your sound bar.
Fundamental to any gym, the weight stack is probably the most important component to get right. Most home gyms use a vinyl weight stack because they keep the price low, more expensive ones will be cast iron but as long as the right amount of weight is there this is not too important.
You have to ensure that you have plenty of weight to allow you to progressively increase your strength because once you reach the maximum weight plate you can’t add anymore. If you’re just starting out look for between 60kg-70kg, intermediate to advanced weight trainers should go for above 80kg. You’re only likely to reach this amount of weight on your compound exercises like chest press or shoulder press but these are vital for consistent muscle growth.
The right range of exercises can define good workouts from bad ones so you must choose wisely. All conventional multi gyms will follow this set up of stations: chest press, pec dec, high pulley (lat pulldown), low pulley and leg developer. You should have at least these features as a minimum as these will give you a good core group of exercises, if you can afford a gym with a couple of extra options in like a shoulder press option or leg press then we recommend going for it.
Pulleys & Cables
They may not be a feature you would really think about or consider when buying a home gym but pulleys and cables play an extremely important role to the operation, cheap models use plastic nylons and bushings with poor cables that add a lot of extra resistance to the weight because of the friction, this makes the selected weight feel heavier than it should. Poor quality also guarantees a juddering, grinding motion making it uncomfortable to train with. For a seamless, smooth feel we stock affordable machines but not cheap ones to avoid this problem. A lot of them even use bearings and most are fitted with 2000lb tensile aircraft cables for long lasting use.
If you want stability, then the right feature that you should look for is a sturdy construction. You don’t want something that is lightweight because it won’t hold up your weight effectively. Some of the best power towers are made of a heavy-duty steel frame.
To allow your unit to stand its ground securely, look for extended leg stabilizers and non-slip end caps. Other significant indicators of stability are D-frame bases and double beam supports.
Power towers are mostly built with a steel frame. Although it offers exceptional durability, it might be a little abrasive to the skin when gets in contact constantly. To solve this issue, manufacturers’ built cushions on areas where you need comfort the most.
For instance, cushions are placed in the angled forearm to place give comfort on the forearm and elbow areas. For maximum comfort, look for ergonomically designed and padded backrest to give support for your back.

A pull-up is an upper body calisthenics exercise which many people see as a key feature of their strength routine.
For that reason a pull up bar is a well-used and essential piece of calisthenics equipment. It can be used for our Pull Ups Progression, as well as many other bodyweight workouts.

There was a time when I moved to a new place and there was no exercise park within 20 km from my house. I needed a dip station and I wasnt keen to get a gym membership. So I got myself this little baby. Note that you can easily use things you have at home or build your own dip station. Anyway, if you have to buy one, this is what I would recommend.
A dips station is a set of parallel bars which can be used especially for our Dips Progression and other exercises. It will allow you to comfortably perform exercises which will give you excellent upper body strength and mass.
Resistance and exercise bands are a great piece of calisthenics equipment which are perfect for home workouts. You can buy sets with many different bands for different resistance as you build strength throughout your progression. Routines with exercise bands are also written into many bodyweight training books. There are also other bodyweight training disciplines which use bands such as yoga and pilates. This equipment can also be used for injury rehabilitation and muscular recovery.
