Hybrid Clubs Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy hybrid clubs, right? No!

Hybrids

In simple terms, a hybrid is a cross between a fairway wood and an iron, delivering both the forgiveness long irons lack and the control that fairway woods can’t offer. Last year over 50% of tour professionals played a hybrid, and an increasing number of amateurs are now joining them, turning to a club that can make those awkward 160-220 yard shots that little bit easier.

Material & Design

Hybrids feature flight faces (like irons), lower face profiles (face height), wider soles and lower center of gravity than traditional long irons. Club specifications are designed to provide distance and trajectory progression transition between the irons and fairway woods.

Hybrids can be part of a complete set design from the manufacturer (3H, 4H, 5H, 6i through PW), or can stand alone and replace the harder to hit long irons in traditional set make ups (3i thru PW).

Club lengths are equal to or slightly longer than traditional long irons. Club lengths will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but generally will progress from 3inches on the shortest, highest lofted hybrid, to 4inches on the longest, lowest lofted hybrid.

Shaft Options

Modern hybrids almost always come with graphite shafts that are usually the same weight or slightly heavier than their matching fairway wood shafts. Shafts are manufactured in R, men’s regular, S, men’s stiff and X for men’s extra stiff.

Titleist 816HHybrid

Titleist unveiled a pair of new hybrids, the 816Hand 816Hat the same time as part of their reorganisation of releases to pair hybrids with irons. The 816His noticeably bigger than the H2, which is not small. The 816His the bigger, easier to hit version and 816His for the better player.

Callaway Golf Big Bertha OS

The Callaway Big Bertha OS hybrid is a very forgiving and easy to hit club in the “mini fairway wood” family. Launched in September, 201Callaway declared this hybrid offered “explosive distance and ultimate forgiveness.”

PING G 30 Hybrid

Launched in 2016, Ping pushed hybrid technology forward with the G’s innovative tiered internal sole that helps activate face flexing to power the ball off the face faster for greater distance. The ultra-thin crown allows for a low-back centre of gravity to ensure high launch, reduced spin and a higher MOI for maximizing forgiveness.

What Can You Expect to Learn from the Best Hybrid Golf Clubs Reviews?

Almost every golfer hitting the golf course will have a well equipped bag, but there will be a sweet spot that can’t be achieved with one of the more common golf clubs, which is where the hybrid golf club comes in. But how can you decide on the best hybrid to give space to in your golf bag? By reading some of the many hybrid golf clubs reviews. How can you be sure that the review is accurate, and what kind of information will the review be comparing? The obvious place to start is by doing a quick search using one of the popular search engines. You’ll be amazed at the number of hits you get and are probably going to find it all a little confusing. There will actually be two types of hits you get – hybrid golf club reviews from product manufacturers, golf advice and sales sites, and forums. Both have their advantages, and are worth spending time reading. You’ll get an all round idea of the brand of hybrid golf club you’re looking to buy, and an honest review from a real live person that has actually used it. You may also be lucky enough to get the opinion of a professional.

What is the purpose of hybrid golf club reviews?

Forgiveness

The core, fundamental purpose of a hybrid is to provide relief from difficult lies/awkward terrain, or even a fall-back off the tee when you’re having a bad day with the driver. Central to this is forgiveness, which is underpinned by factors such as low CG, high MOI, a thin face, high ball speeds and also an agreeable look and feel. You want your hybrid(s) to be your go-to club, so it’s essential all these elements measure up to your needs. That way, you can develop consistency, and really establish a strong relationship with these types of club.

Distance

It’s not just about hitting the ball as far as you can – although that certainly helps! Hybrids help you to bring an element of precision to your distance control when further out. Although they are useful for laying up on the fairway, ultimately you want to be in tune with how far each hybrid goes, and in varying conditions. That’s something you can only gauge once you’ve hit numerous shots with them, which once again underscores the importance of choosing wisely, and giving your prospective hybrid(s) a thorough trial.

A golf ball is the centerpiece of your golfing because without it, you will not be playing much golf. The ball might seem like a tiny thing with minute details but the truth is that everything in and on the ball matters, from the size, the materials used in the constructions and the design. Selecting a golf all can be tricky especially because there are quite a number of things to consider. This includes things such as the price, design, model and brands. It is also important to keep in mind that choosing a single brand and sticking to it will assist in eliminating any performance variations.

The design of the golf ball determines the control you have and the distance you achieve on the golf course. The Golf Spy is your ultimate review source for golf balls from different brands and you can use the reviews to choose the ideal ball.

Golf Rangefinders

Technology has really changed the way sports are played and one among the technological pieces that have found their way into golfing are the rangefinders. With these devices, you can precisely know the distance between you and the flagstick, giving you a chance to calculate your swing and improve your performance.

Rangefinders are used by all the top golfers and if you are just starting out or you are a pro player, you will need the assistance offered by these gadgets. A rangefinder will simply eliminate the guesswork that results in inaccurate swings and once you start using one, you will notice an improvement in your precision. Golf Bags

Golf bags are important for any golfer because this is where all the clubs, golf balls and other equipment are kept. Like other golf pieces, golf bags have evolved over time and are now made of lighter materials that are strong. There are different bags aimed at different players and these bags come from different manufacturers. This means that you can have a difficult time choosing the ideal golf bag when you don’t have all the necessary details to assist you in your shopping. There are some important factors that you will need to consider when buying a golf bag including the items you will be carrying in the bag and your golfing tendencies.

At The Golf Spy, we have reviews covering different golf bags from different manufactures. These reviews are provided by experts and are aimed at ensuring that you make an informed choice when you are buying your golf bag.

Launch Angle

Launch angle is the angle at which you strike the ball into the air with your driver and is largely determined by the degree of the loft in the driver. Ultimately, the launch angle is one of the biggest factors determining the spin rate, and, in turn, the speed of the ball. So, if you have a slower swing, you should try to improve the angle. Here is a general guideline: • 80-90mph – 11-1degrees • 90-100mph – 10-1degrees • 100+ mph – 9-1degrees

Weight of the Shaft

Since heavier shafts traditionally produce lower spin rates, and they are much harder to carry and swing around, in this scenario, they are completely out of the question. Instead, you should look for the lighter shafts that will enhance your speed without lowering the spin rate. That means – shafts that weigh no more than 50-5grams.

Weight Distribution

All good clubs have to have properly distributed weight. In the case of drivers, moving more weight toward grip instead of clubhead can improve the distance and accuracy of your strokes, so always look for the clubs that feature the heavier grip.

Length of the Shaft

The length of the shaft you are going to choose depends entirely on your skill and playing style which means that shorter and longer shafts are both to be taken into consideration. However, there is no denying that if you know how to correctly aim your strike and hit the ball in the dead center, the longer shaft can cover more distance in one stroke. If you are not that skillful, you should better stay off the excessively long shafts, and stick to the 43-46-inch range.

Shaft Flex

The rules regarding flex are fairly straightforward – slower the swing, the more flex you want in the shaft. So, if you are hitting the ball at the speeds slower than 110mph, you should probably choose some of the regular shafts (the most flexible ones). On the other hand, if you are still swinging fast, you can try your luck with some of the extra stiff shafts.

Material

Since the most of the currently available clubs are made of titanium, you won’t have to spend too much time looking for the best build material, and in this case, that is not that bad of a thing. Titanium is very durable, and yet very lightweight. However, there is still a couple of ways to make your golfing sessions more pleasant. If you can, buy the composite clubs that use materials like carbon and tungsten to balance out the weight.

Latest news

With more than 50 hybrid models on the UK market in 2018, and ever more models being released each year, hybrids have truly taken their place alongside conventional cars. Additionally, diesel hybrids are common in many UK showrooms, joining the more established petrol hybrid option.

Hybrid car running costs

Most running costs are less for hybrids than conventional vehicles. The higher capital costs are mainly offset by lower fuel costs due to the high fuel economy of the vehicles themselves as hybrids typically use less fuel per mile. Hybrids therefore make most economic sense for high mileage drivers as the reduced fuel costs will help to recoup the higher purchase price.

Difference between a Male and Female Golf Club Set

Since men are naturally taller, stronger than women, same is the case with their club sets. While the male golfers can afford to play with heavier, longer shafted clubs, the best women’s golf clubs are the exact opposite. They should possess a smooth grip, have a ladies flex and must be made of a lighter material. All this is done to facilitate the slower swing speed of a female golfer.

Budget Pick

Every one of these club set is made according to the highest quality of standards. No matter whichever product you choose, your game is destined to improve with its help.

But as far as the budget scenario is concerned, I’d go for

WILSON ULTRA Women’s Complete Golf Club Set w/Bag. Ideal for women having a specific height, this is undoubtedly the most inexpensive product in the above-mentioned list. So if you take golf as a recreational sport, you can always buy this product by living inside your budget from

Factors to Consider

Type of Club Head – With each hybrid club, it is typically one of two styles; it is either head shaped like an iron, or a head which is a smaller version of a 3-Wood. If it is more like an iron, it will have a muscle back or cavity back design, whereas the Hybrid will have more of a bulging back to it. What makes the Hybrid so effective is that it gives a higher trajectory than a typical iron, but also a lower trajectory than a typical 3-Wood. This in-between club gives you a multitude of shot options, and depending on if you hit an iron better, or your 3-Wood better, will determine which kind of head you should have on your hybrid club.

Weight of the Hybrid – The first thing which truly determines the weight of your Hybrid club is the shaft. If you go with a steel shaft, then you will have a higher weight to your hybrid, which is recommended for those of you who like to hit the ball as far as possible with as hard of a swing as possible. You can also use a graphite shaft, which is a lighter material, and allows you to swing the club faster if you have a hard time generating club speed as you accelerate through the ball. The weight of the Hybrid is truly dependent on what you are comfortable with swinging, but if you have the steel shafts, and are not hitting the ball as hard as you used to, then going with Graphite might be the answer. If you have Graphite, and it’s too light and you swing the club way too fast, then you might need to step over to the Steel shaft.

Shaft Length – Although you may think taking the approach that a one size fits all with the shafts, this is not necessarily true. You should not have to change your stance to utilize the hybrid you purchase. The standard shafts changes depending on which hybrid club you are going with. The standard shaft length does vary between 36” and 40”. However, just because you buy a standard hybrid, this hybrid may or may not work for you and your stance. You can have the shaft either lengthened or shortened by a professional, or by sending it back to the manufacturer to have them take care of it. To know the proper length, you should stand in your normal stance in comparable to where the ball is laying on the ground, and then place your arms where they feel the most natural. Depending upon where they land on the grip will tell you how you should move the shaft. If your hands are towards the top of the grip, then you need to lengthen the hybrid. If they are more towards the bottom of the grip, then you need to shorten the shaft.

Grip – There are a variety of grips available to you on each golf hybrid. Most hybrids come with a standard grip, and those can be any assortment of grips that the manufacturer puts on their clubs. You might have a grip made out of leather, or out of rubber, and it could be a smooth grip or a rigid grip. This is why it is important to try out a few different types of hybrids, along with their grips, as the grips on a hybrid can be easily changed out. Most local golf stores have a large selection of grips to choose from, and can easily change out the grip that is on your hybrid club for the best grip that meets your needs.

After you have selected what aspects of each hybrid are important to you, you will then need to decide which brand of hybrid you want to go with. It is recommended that you stay with one brand for all of your clubs, as they will typically have the same feel and balance. If you continue to use different branded clubs that have a different balance, it will throw your swing off, which will lead to worse scores overall.

Here are some of the brands of hybrid golf clubs out in the market today.

Callaway Men’s XR Hybrid

This Callaway Hybrid is designed to give you increase golf ball speed, utilizing its forged hyper speed face cup. This face cup provides you with more forgiveness when you strike the ball, allowing you to have greater distance and accuracy, even when you hit the ball directly in the center of the hybrid. This Hybrid comes with a larger head, allowing you to have a lower CG and a higher MOI. This hybrid is available to both the left handed and right handed player, and has three options concerning the flexibility of the shaft. You have four different degree options, including 19, 22, 2and 28.

Callaway Men’s Big Bertha Hybrid

This Callaway Hybrid is a different version of their very successful line of drivers, the big bertha. This hybrid is very light and thin, but also robust, as the large headed face will allow you to hit the ball and have it launch off the clubface very quickly. This club comes with an adjustable head, which allows you to change the lie and loft of the hybrid, up to eight different combinations, allowing you to be flexible in the kind of shot you need to take. Due to the size of the head, this hybrid is a forgiving club, so even if you do not hit in directly in the middle of the club, you will still have a decent looking shot. This hybrid golf club is available to both left handed and right handed players, and has different shaft flexibility options. You can buy this club in three different loft angles; 1degrees, 2degrees and 2degrees. The large head is mostly comprised of black, with some red accents.

Callaway Men’s Big Bertha Alpha 81Hybrid

Another hybrid in the line of the Callaway Big Bertha series, it comes with the Forged Hyper Speed face cup, which is found across the entire large head of this hybrid. You will have less spin when utilizing this hybrid, and have a more controlled trajectory. It also comes with the way adjustable head, where you can change the lie and the loft of the head into eight different combinations. It is a lightweight hybrid club, allowing you to generate more club speed with every swing. It is available to both left handed and right handed golfers, and has three standard shafts available to you. You have three different degrees to choose from for a loft – 1degrees, 20 degrees and 2degrees. This large headed hybrid is mostly black, with some red accents.

Cobra Men’s 3-W Bio Cell Hybrid

This Cobra hybrid is equipped with MyFlyTechnology, allowing you to make eight different adjustments to the loft, which is ideal for being a versatile club within your bag. This hybrid also had steel face inserts, which have been thinly forged, allowing for longer distances due to higher trajectories and faster ball speed. There is a large sweet spot on the large head of this hybrid, which allows for a little bit of forgiveness if not hit directly in the center of the face. This hybrid comes in black, but you have the choice of four different accent colors – black, silver, red and blue. This Hybrid can be bought for either the left handed or right handed golfer, and has three graphite shaft flexibilities for you to choose from.

Callaway Men’s XHot Pro Hybrid

This large headed hybrid from Callaway has the Speed face feature on it, which results in faster ball speeds, which creates longer shots. The forgiveness factor with this hybrid is quite high, which will reduce the number of slices and hooks, which will mean your ball should travel further and straighter each and every time. This hybrid comes in black with orange accents, and can be purchased for either the left handed or right handed player. Its graphite shaft comes in two different kinds of flexibility, and there are four different loft angles you can purchase – a 1degree, an 1degree, a 20 degree and a 2degree loft.

Inexpensive Hybrid Golf Clubs

When it comes to buying golf clubs, most sets do not include a hybrid club. This is done on purpose, because not everyone wants a hybrid; even if you do want a hybrid, the challenge is finding the right loft size, shaft length and club head to fit your style. It is much easier to just purchase your own hybrid, then to have it included in a set. In comparison to Irons and Drivers, which can be more standardized, the hybrid needs to be much more precise.  However, with the variety of golf hybrids on the market, it is not hard to imagine that you could spend up to a few hundreds dollars just for one hybrid golf club. If you have saved up for as set of golf clubs, but don’t have much money left over for a hybrid, you have a few options available to you. The best brand of cheap hybrid clubs you can purchase is the Pinemeadow brand. Most of their hybrids are very affordable, and offer you some of the same technological advances that the major brands have, but at a discounted rate. The reason for this is that Pinemeadow does not want to be the trend setter in the market. However, they will see what the trends are, and will come out with a version of a hybrid that matches what is happening in the marketplace. Due to them not coming out with it first, they can get the materials needed for less compared to when they were first made available. As with all products across the board, the longer you wait for something, typically, the more inexpensive you will be able to find it for. This is what Pinemeadow specializes in, and they have leveraged this thinking into making some of the better golf hybrid clubs out on the market.

Another option for the thrifty golfer is to go to your local golf course pro shop, and see what kind of hybrid golf clubs they have that were found on the course. Even though you might not ever lose your clubs when you are golfing, there are plenty of people who drop their hybrids near the green and forget about them, and consequently don’t remember where they left them. Most pro shops have a section just for clubs they found on the course, and typically sell them for much less than what you would find at a store. These kinds of hybrid golf clubs will work in the short term, but as discussed, you will need to get them fitted for you correctly if you are going to effectively use that hybrid for the long-term.

Another few options for you when looking for an inexpensive hybrid is by either looking for hybrid gold clubs at a garage sale, or going onto a site like e-bay and seeing what is available. Although some people understand the value of hybrids, more times than not, they are just wanting to get rid of them, and are willing to sell them for a deeper discount than you would be able to find at any retail store. Of course, you always have to be conscious of what you are buying, and ensure you are getting the hybrid golf club you intended to buy.

No matter which avenue you choose for your hybrid, if you want one that is inexpensive, you can either go with a brand which offers more discounted hybrids, or stay patient, and find the hybrid you want at the right time through using a variety of different sources.

How to Make the Right decision when it comes to Purchasing your own Hybrid

When it comes to purchasing a correct golf hybrid, there are many factors to consider:

Hybrid Balance – Each hybrid golf club weighs a different amount, from the head to the shaft to the grip. Because this is the case, the actual balance of the hybrid is very important to how effective it will be for you. Not only this, but how the hybrid is weighted within the head will have a big impact on how you swing thru your golf ball. You typically have to choose between a large headed hybrid or an iron headed hybrid. With the large headed hybrid, this golf club is better for those people who swing a driver better than an iron. This hybrid style is the preferred style of most of the professional golfers playing today. If you can swing your Irons better than a driver, then you will want a hybrid that looks more like your typical iron The Iron hybrid will typically have a higher trajectory compared to a large faced hybrid, but you can achieve your desired results with either faced club. It is all about what is most comfortable for you, and once you figure that out, you can move onto the next step.

Hybrid Weight – There are typically two kinds of weights when it comes to the hybrid club; you have the heavier hybrids and the lighter hybrids. The heavier hybrid is typically better for those who might want a little bit slower of a club head speed, which allows you to have more control. In contrast, if you want a faster club head speed to generate a further distance with your shots, then you want a lighter hybrid. By using a heavier hybrid, you will typically hit the ball where you want it to go, but the ball will spin less, meaning less distance from a long roll. By using a lighter hybrid, you have less control over the placement of your golf ball down the course, but it has faster ball spin, which allows you to hit the ball further.

Hybrid Length – When you purchase a standard hybrid, the standard length does vary by which hybrid you purchase, but for the most part, they all are between 36” and 40”. When it comes to utilizing your hybrid golf club, as we are sure you are starting to see, it should not be considered a one size fits all category. You need to find out where you are most comfortable when swinging at a golf ball so you can have the highest results. Do you like to be hunched over more? If so, a shorter shaft would be better for you. In contrast, would you rather stand up more upright? This means you will need a longer shaft. There is no weakness in having a hybrid golf club which is a different length than the standard form, and no matter how much your golfing buddies might laugh at you, if you are hitting long shots all day long, they will not be laughing at your game for too long.

Finding the Right Angle – Most of the standard golf hybrids come with a present angle, unless you have a Hybrid club where you can change the loft angle on the fly. No matter what kind of hybrid you choose, a universal truth when it comes to striking a ball is that you want the bottom of your golf club to be lying flat on the ground when you get ready to take your shot. You may need to take your hybrid into a pro shop to have them adjust the height of the shaft, or the angle of the head off the shaft. However, be very cautious with this, as you don’t want to give to a shop that does not have the proper equipment to change the angle. It’s not just simply hitting it with a hammer in a vice. To feel even more comfortable, you may want to send your hybrid back to the manufacturer, so they can change the shaft or the angle of the head on your hybrid golf club.

There are a lot of moving parts when it comes to finding the right hybrid, and taking the proper steps to ensure you have the right setup for when you will be taking your next important shot will give you the confidence you need in order to make that shot when it counts.

Golf Hybrid FAQ

When it comes to finding the right hybrid golf club for you, as you can see, there are a variety of different components involved with finding the best hybrid for your golf game. It is not as easy as just picking up a hybrid, liking how it feels, and going with it. Although you could be successful in this approach, you are settling for something that is good, when you could have something that is great. It does take extra time to find the right hybrid for you and your style. However, that extra time could mean the difference between shooting par on a hole, and shooting for a birdie (or, if your equipment doesn’t fit right, a bogey). When it comes to finding the right hybrid golf club, there are plenty of questions out there, and here is a sampling of a few of them.
