Jointers Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy jointers, right? No!

Cutting Depth

This is also another essential factor that you need to look into. It simply refers to the amount of thickness of the wood that can be detached in one pass. The reason why this aspect is an important consideration is that it will make it easy for you to determine the number of rounds you would do before getting your desirable shape or piece of wood.

Flatness of The Bed

It is also another vital element to consider when making a purchase of a jointer planner machine. What you need to have in mind is that the ultimate reason for using this machine is to give you a smooth and uniform wood surface. It, therefore, means that you need to ensure that the one you are choosing has the flattest bed to make it possible for you to attain better and desirable results.

The price at which your preferred jointer planner machine goes for is also an essential factor that cannot be undervalued. These machines come at different prices depending on the specifications as well as the manufacturer or model. The most important thing, however, is to ensure that you first establish your budget then shop for one that is within your budget.

DEWALT DW682K 6.Amp Plate Joiner

If you are looking for amazing woodworking experience, then the Dewalt Plate joiner should be your ideal choice. It provides the accuracy that is needful especially when creating joints and comes with a powerful motor reliable for making deep cuts of up to 20 mm irrespective of the nature and texture of the timber.

It is also made of various resilient materials that give it stability as well as making it durable. The design is also appealing to the eye. It is easy to use thus making it ideal for both the novices and the professionals since not much knowledge is needed for operating it.

It is constructed in a manner that the pinion fence and the dual rack enables the blade and fence always to stay parallel to help in providing accurate joints all the time.

Features

This unit is arguably the best one to have in your workshop. It is very affordable, but its performance is way above its price tag. What this suggests is that you should never let the price tag for this machine make you hesitant in obtaining it. It is an excellent piece to have for all your DIY projects.

Delta’s 37-071

The 37-07is not lightweight by regular jointer standards and its average compared to competing benchtops. It weighs a bit over 80 lbs. and the weight is solid enough to provide stability when you’re cutting large boards because it minimizes the wobbling/vibration. The whole body has a cast iron build. The 37-07is the best option for professional because if you’re coming from regular jointers you’re going to need a powerful jointer to not notice a significant downgrade. The same can be said about beginners who plan on working full time and need a reliable tool that gives them maximum output for the volume they’re expecting to process.

The table is engineered for precision and you’re going to make extremely accurate cuts. It can process every kind of wood including the hardest hardwoods and you can join together multiple wood types easily. It can join 2xboards with ease. The positive stops are adjustable, ranging from 4to 90 degrees and there are big aluminum cutters. They are conveniently located on the cutting end and the cutters can penetrate the hardest wood. If you want to replace the blades with your own or you’ve used it for too long and need new replacements, the company makes maintenance a breeze. Delta included careful jackscrew arrangement and there are special push blocks that allow you to move your wood safely from one end to the other. If you’re a professional you can dismantle and assemble the whole jointer at a whim.

There are also extra add-ons such as a dust blower that takes trapped residue dust and blows it out. The collection port is excellent and the 37-07comes with Delta’s year backing warranty that includes servicing and replacements. There is also a 90 day money back guarantee that gives you the necessary headway to experiment and see if it’s the best jointer for you.

Our favorite feature about the 37-07is the heaviness that gives it a feeling similar to a large sized jointer and you don’t feel like you’re missing out or the wood is slippery when you use it. You get a sense of grounded stability working with this unit because you can tell it’s never going to slip. The blade adjustment is also high-functioning because it takes under a minute to adjust blades or fully replace them. Despite the heavy-duty build the unit is surprisingly simplistic and easy to use. You only have adjust the fence and then you’re ready to go.

Fast Assembly

The assembly on the 37-07is the fastest from the high-end and it should take you under 30 minutes to do it on your own. You could do it even faster if you have someone around to help you. The package is average because it comes in a standard multi-layered box with all the main components and outlets included. To get started remove the styrofoam bits and begin assembling. It doesn’t appear too heavy nor too flimsy which means it’s solid packaging. It could only get damaged on the way to you if you’re extremely unlucky. If that happens Delta promises to deliver replacements. The assembly instructions are clear and it should take you under an hour to put it together with all the different components. If you’ve assembled jointers in the past you could do it on your own and ditch the manual.

Paying For A Brand Name

Delta is one of the most renowned and seasoned brands in the power tool industry. If you don’t know who they are think of them as the Apple of power tool manufacturers. The common denominator for all Delta products is that they are high-end and always a bit above the average market price because they consistently offer superior build quality and customer service. If you only had to work with a single company for the rest of your life you wouldn’t go wrong with Delta products. They’ve been in the business for decades and this means their products won’t disappear overnight and if you need to replace a part on your 37-07three years from now, they’ll still deliver with replacements. They revolutionized the industry with the most accurate cutting jointers and they’re at the helm in the benchtop industry. Their products are not only geared towards professionals but beginner woodworkers can greatly benefit as well.

Exceptional Customer Service

The reason Delta releases command higher price tags than the market average is because the company offers superior customer service. They work around the clock to provide immediate assistance for their clients and this includes new prospects as well. If you want to inquire about some of their individual parts prior to purchasing they actually encourage you to give them a call. They also offer fast shipping on individual parts and have replacements for outdated machines. This is imperative for professionals who work with tight schedules and the market knows you can never go wrong with a Delta.

Why It Makes Sense

If you’re starting out as a woodworker you’re going to need a handful of tools before you can get started. The most important tools for the trade are jointers, planers, routers and saws. You’re also going to need blades for the machines and overall the costs tend to add up fast (if you’re only using the best equipment). This is why you should invest wisely and the best way to go about it is to allocate the highest % of your resources to tools that give you the highest ROI and make the most difference. For instance, jointers are the most important component because they never come secondary. If you don’t want to be associated with inferior work you need the best jointer, the Delta is a proven company. If you use the 37-07you’ll be covered on with the most powerful benchtop and you’ll make products that you can display proudly. You need a high level of precision to do quality work Delta produces the most accurate jointers.

Some people will mislead you by advising you to allocate all your money on classes and workshops before you start taking action but this is false narrative because for the first time in history you can get all the equipment you need for under a thousand dollars. If you don’t start now you are only delaying your true calling and there is no better time to start than the present moment. The jointers have never been more powerful and at the same time they have never been this affordable. You have you North Star, and now is the time to act on it. You’ll be able to hone the craft at your own leisure and having the most powerful jointer to help you out will ensure you’re covered on the one part that matters more than the others.

There is nothing you won’t be able to do with the 37-07and despite the company’s high standards, this is actually one of their best products. It surpasses competing benchtops in the price range. Delta’s are known for their high reliability and the 37-07offers high-level calibration and dead-on precise cutting. This should make it appealing as a top consideration if you’re on the market for a reliable benchtop.

It will diversify your options at the job site and give you consistent performance. It will help you establish yourself and allow you to produce the flattest boards.

The 37-07is surprisingly quiet and maintenance is negligible. If you ever need to replace the cutters, Delta will provide the necessary replacements and the 90 day money back guarantee serves as a testament to the company’s high reliability. This jointer is easily worth more than its current market value. This is definitely a no-brainer for professionals and aspiring wood workers.

Grizzly G0725

The G072is Grizzly’s best benchtop release and if you’re looking for an affordable benchtop that lasts, comes with a beautiful metal finish and is easy to use/doesn’t overwhelm you on the maintenance end – look no further than the G0725.

It has 1-1/HP motor that consumes little energy and the machine is just as heavy-duty as the Delta, weighing over 80 lbs. The table and fence are both cast iron and it’s arguably the most beautiful design finish on our list. This is the kind of jointer you expect to see when you walk into a professional workshop.

The 6″ coverage gives you immense leverage knowing you’ll be able to power through the most resilient hardwoods. If you’re a beginner this is an excellent starter option because it will give you the craft knowledge necessary to feel comfortable when you upgrade to a more high-powered solution later in your career. It’s also great as a complimentary jointer for professionals who could benefit from the added portability.

Smoothest Cuts

The G072provides smooth cutting and we noticed it has the most accurate/dead-on precision in the price range. It’s not as precise as the more expensive Delta but it blows similarly priced benchtops out the water. You’ll be left with zero snipe and this machine is geared towards beginners who need to experiment and eventually transition to the most high-powered options. We recommend you start by using the square cut to see how it performs and give it a few passes to develop a feel for the cutting power. You’ll be surprised at the immense cutting power it provides and you shouldn’t underestimate the G072because the motor is almost as powerful as motors on benchtops that cost 50% more. You should consider getting ear protection because it’s a bit louder than the Delta and it’s not as loud as the largest jointers but it’s certainly loud based on benchtop standards. The G072leaves zero knife marks on your boards and it cuts with great precision. You’ll be able to make thousands of passes with different hard woods before you notice a decline in blade sharpness. The blades will retain their peak sharpness and the maintenance work you have to do will be minimal.

Straight-Forward Assembly

You shouldn’t assume that the more affordable options take longer to assemble because they’re simpler and there are only a few main components you have to put together. They basically come pre-assembled. You should be able to put them together without looking the manual. The set-up process on the Grizzle will take you up to half an hour if you decide to do it on your own. If you get someone to help you, you could do it even faster. The only thing you have to do is screw a few bolts, hold some pieces together and voila! You’re ready. Grizzly laid out the knives in an ideal manner and positioned them next to the feed table while the fence is easy to set up as well.

We recommend purchasing test 2xboards to give you an idea about the full spectrum of cutting lineaments on this unit. It should be able to flatten them to a satisfactory level after only a few passes. Everything is designed to make it easy on you to go to work fast as soon as you can assemble it. The packaging is also surpassingly above average. Below average (based on our criteria) would be zero styrofoam and a single box, average would be styrofoam/simple boxing and above average it needs both styrofoam and double boxing. The Grizzly G072has above average packaging with styrofoam coating and double boxing that ensures not a single components is damaged on the way to your workshop.

Powertec’s BJ600

If you’re on a tight budget but you still expect certain standards, this is your solution. It’s efficient, quiet, powerful and clean. It also features extras such as dust collection and a rate of 20.000 CPM (cuts per minute) accompanied by a 1AMP motor. It’s easily comparable to jointers outside of its price range.

The main area where the BJ600 shines compared to the Grizzly is the cleanliness because the dust collection capability is the best in the starter benchtop lineup. It comes with a dedicated dust collection system that keeps you safe, ensures no residue is left behind and minimizes maintenance work. The BJ600 comes with a standard dual cutter head which provides for efficient, accurate cutting. The fence is also adjustable with positive stops ranging from 45-90 degrees (standard) and it has an extremely rigid cast iron fence.

Cast iron material usually weighs more than any other iron and this provides higher-level stability, especially when you’re cutting heavy boards and you don’t want it to waiver. There is next level adjustability on the BJ600. All you have to do is tilt the table to a 4degree angle and you’ll be able to smoothen out the largest boards. The blades are powerful enough to penetrate the hardest woods. You won’t have to purchase separate items because the basic package comes with all the equipment you need.

Expedited Assembly

If you’re impressed by the cutting performance and build quality you’ll be even more impressed by the simplistic assembly process. The company pre-assembled the big parts to save you time and the only thing you have to do is attach the two side outlets: the fence and dedicated dust collector. If you’re knowledgeable and want to make adjustments you can easily dismantle the whole jointer and make the changes on your own.

We recommend the BJ600 for beginners because it’s the easiest to assemble from our selection and it shouldn’t take you more than a couple of minutes to assemble. Powertec delivers it pretty much pre-assembled and you only have to install the few main add-ons. This is valuable for beginners who don’t have time to fiddle with extensive instruction manuals. The instruction manual is clear as day but you should be able to figure it out instinctively. Powertec designed this unit to save you time and you’ll be able to start experimenting as soon as you have it.

WEN 6560

It comes with a standard blade cutting system and an average cutter head that gives consistent precise cuts. The cast iron fence creates an unwavering feeling and it can be categorized as stationary in a sense that when you adjust it it refuses to move. This gives you an increased feeling of security because if you’re in the middle of multiple runs and you want to perfect a certain piece you won’t be getting nervous. There is a 2″ dust port located to the side that attaches to the main frame. It also has a blower but it’s already built into the main body. This is an advance to average benchtops because they make you adjust it manually.

The dust collection bag that comes with the 6560 is average but you can always purchase a larger dust bag to save on maintenance necessary. The machine is flawless and you can run every kind of hardwood through the feeders. It features a 1AMP motor which a bit more powerful than the Grizzly/Powertec and justifies the slightly higher price tag. The motor provides 18K CMP and an estimated 2ft./minute feed rate. The speed mostly depends on the thickness of the board. Thicker boards usually take longer to process. We noticed it handles 6″ boards with ease and the boards can be very wide. WEN used high quality granite for the table that makes sure your wood glides smoothly as you glide it through to the feeders. There is also zero wobbling downside because it’s a heavy-duty construction and always remains stationary.

Adjustability is flawless and the most important feature is the depth adjustment because you have to adjust your jointer before you can run thick boards. There is a knob for depth adjustment and the machine is very responsive at every turn. You can adjust the whole jointer in real time. The built-in dust port utilizes fans to remove the residue sawdust as well as the wood you don’t need. The fans are surprisingly powerful and leave nothing behind. The feeding tables have adjustable height and you can adjust snipe on the outfeed table.

Fast Setup

The setup takes a tad longer than the Powertec but it’s equally straight-forward and the instructions are as clear as they can be. It’s going to serve as a learning experience if this is your first time assembling a jointer because you’ll familiarize yourself with all the components. It’s the perfect mid-range challenge. It’s not too easy (as in 100% pre-assembled) and it’s not too hard to a point where you’ll be forced to seek professional help. WEN designs lots of smart products and their tools are consistently among the most reliable. The 6560 comes with base holes at the bottom that allow you to attach them to any flat surface. You could install your 6560 to be stationary and not move at all or you could bring it on different job sites.

Great Customer Service

WEN has the longest track record for producing excellent product out of any company on our list. They exist since the early 50’s and they manufacture the exact same things as they did back then: power tools. Their drill press is the best selling in history and they have a wide array of products for wood workers. The best part about them is that they’re based out of the US and have technicians on standby in every state. If you ever need on-site assistance to fix or replace a part, you’ll never be a few hours’ drive from the nearest WEN outlet. They also have 24/support lines and the 6560 unit comes with a year warranty that includes replacement and servicing for every part. Their customer service can be compared to the more expensive Delta because they are 24/and nothing short of excellent.

The 6560 is a steal because it’s among the most affordable and it comes with superior customer service. It takes a bit longer to assemble compared to the “starter” benchtops (Grizzly and Powertec) but it’s the perfect kind of challenge and you could assemble it on your own with a bit of effort. WEN makes some of the most reliable tools and the 6560 will help you edge out/flatten every hardwood as you wish. It only weighs 70 lbs. making it the most lightweight option on our list and one of the most portable in the industry. If you need a small benchtop that is reliable for work outside the main workshop,

Powerful 1Amp Motor and Two High-Speed Knives

In terms of power, the JJP-10BTOS jointer planer combo is up to the task. It comprise a 1amp motor which provides steady performance for different kind of cutting operations. It also comprises two high-speed steel knives which are used for making cuts and they are very precise and smooth.

Oversized Ergonomic Knobs

The JJP-10BTOS jointer planer combo comes with oversized ergonomic knobs which are extremely necessary for safety reasons. They give you very easy access to the controls while you are working, which helps to avoid errors caused by a slippery grip, and saves time that might have been wasted hunting for buttons or switches that are hard to see.

From contributor J

If I was going to spend up to 5K apiece on these two machines, I would look at used because I wouldn’t be able to afford what I wanted new. While I’m not familiar with the machines you suggested, anything Powermatic has made since moving overseas is junk compared to the old stuff, as is Delta. The Laguna stuff is made by Robland I believe and is decent, but you can do better. You can get a very nice used Northfield or Oliver or Porter jointer for that kind of money, 16″ wide if you want it. Maybe an old Powermatic 180 planer? There is a lot of beautiful used equipment out there, and this stuff will last forever, unlike the crap they are building in China.

From contributor K

I agree with the others. Judging from the number of major plants closing across the country, you should be able to pick up some great equipment very cheap in today’s economy. I think I am seeing a new one added about every three days. I sure hope something can be done to stop the loss of so many jobs to overseas producers soon. Check out the auction sites.

From contributor W

I have both the PM 128and 20and found them to be solid performers. A buddy had a 20and had nothing but trouble with it, but then he was putting 15k bd/ft of hardwood through it a year. He eventually gave up and bought a pristine rebuilt older Powermatic 18″ planer. I keep my 20tuned up and it runs like a champ.

Admittedly, today’s PM is not the PM of 20 years ago, but I think in this price range you would be hard pressed to do better. The castings all come form the same place, but WMH seems to do a far better job trimming out the Powermatic line. I would definitely take PM over Delta.

It seems there is really no middle ground between these and the 20k commercial machines. We have a Laguna TSS (this machine is actually made by Zimm Stomana in Bulgaria) which has been solid, but I have to wonder if we would have fared better by spending a bit more for a Felder.

I looked seriously at a lot of used machines before making these purchases, and it seemed like there were few true bargains. Good machines command serious money no matter what, and the bigger they are, the more careful you have to be about the moving and setup. You never know what you may inherit. At least the new WMH machines came with a warranty.

Makes a lot of wood chip mess

Dewalt really considered lifetime vs price in this model. The replaceable knives are a nice touch. However, because it is heavy duty it can be quite heavy.

The DeWalt 1inch two speed planer truly is a power planer. This planer has three knives, a powerful motor, and can handle larger pieces of wood than smaller planers.

The 15-amp motor runs at 20,000 RMPs. It features a 2-speed gear box, letting you set the feed speed at either 9or 17CPI. This allows for greater exactness in your woodworking.

This model also includes a fan-assisted chip ejection vacuum. Chips and sawdust are vacuumed off the cutter-head and ejected from the machine.

This planer has a very wide base: 1¾ inches, nearly twice the width of the standard inch base on most planers. This provides a more rigid base, which helps reduce snipe, as does the automatic carriage lock.

The DW735X also includes a material removal gauge, an extra-large thickness scale and an extra-large turret depth. This set comes with infeed and outfeed tables and an extra set of knives for the cutter-head.

Dimensional Specifications

How thick a board do you want to be able to plane? How thin do you want your planer to be able to go? If you are looking to plane thick boards, you will likely need to invest in a larger machine.

Planers are precision instruments that shave wood off millimeters at a time. Make sure that the planer you buy can handle the wood you want to work.

If you want to make a large table top, you may need to get a jointer planer and join the pieces together after they are planed.

Stroke Count

Stroke count is determined by the speed of the knives. Having more blades can also increase the stroke count. Some planers have variable speeds, which would allow you to diversify your work.

Different woods work best with different stroke counts. Depending on whether you use soft or hard woods, you may need higher or lower stroke counts.

Three guiding principles

And so it is with tools. Mediocre tools are inherently limited in the results they can produce. An excellent tool allows you to expand your ability without limits, even if sometimes for the sake of economy you have to alter your approach to a project.

Saves Time

One of the biggest benefits of owning a jointer is that it saves you time. Yes, you can flatten wood and joint board edges manually, but a jointer will save you considerable time. Time is a valuable thing that could be better spent on your woodworking project.
