Kickboards are a training aid which can help to develop your lower body muscle groups and can help you to focus on your kicking technique for most swimming strokes.
Made with a buoyant foam material, kickboards add buoyancy to you in the water, providing you with support. Choosing the right kickboard is important. Choose a kickboard which sits roughly shoulder width apart to give you the correct buoyancy in the water and support you.
How to Use
There are multiple positions in which to use your kickboard.
Hold the kickboard by the front edge, elbows resting on top of the board. Your head can be lifted with your face down in the water and adding in your breathing pattern, whichever is most comfortable to you.
Hugging the board whilst on your back is a technique often seen when trying to develop the back stroke and develop confidence in the water. By hugging the board to your body you are adding buoyancy in the water and support to your body and here you can relax your body in the water and allow a natural backstroke leg kick to be worked.
You can try your kickboard with front crawl, backstroke and breastroke to help develop your kicking technique. Avoid using when working on your butterfly technique as you can cause back injury

Triathlon Training Swim Bundle
The triathlon training swim bundle includes the basics above plus swim training tools (AKA, “swim toys”) to improve the effectiveness of the time you spend in the pool. We’ll explain how to use each of them and give you examples of some sets you can add to your favorite workouts. Hand paddles and fins come in a variety of sizes, so read below to make sure you get the correct ones.
We designed this triathlon swim bundle to help you improve your technique.
TYR Burner EBP Fins will help you to become a stronger kicker while keeping your kick speed up (high cadence). Longer fins are great too, and will build more strength, but tend to slow your kick down. Tami often finds herself telling triathletes to think “small fast kicks,” and these fins will help the athlete stick to that goal while building leg strength.
Select the appropriate size: Based on your shoe size, consult the size chart. If you border sizes, size up.
How to use: To put them on, simply get your feet and the fins wet and slip them on! Use the fins to aid kick during swim sets, to kick with a kickboard, to kick without a kickboard, or for vertical kicking.

First, try kicking with hands at the surface. Try with hands out of the water. Then try hands above head in streamline. This video shows streamline position.
Hand paddles increase upper body strength and improve technique. We have selected the TYR Mentor Training Paddles because they are perfect for swimmers of all levels; are durable, lightweight, and flexible; and have a variety of lacing options.
Select the appropriate size: Beginners will want to pick the size closest to the same size as, or just slightly bigger than, their hand. Measure the longest and widest part of your hand and compare it to the size chart. You do not want a paddle that is shorter than your hand; it won’t do what it is designed to. Avoid going much bigger (for example, 2″+ around the outside of your hand) to avoid strain and injury.
How to use: The straps can be applied in many different ways. Personally, Tami always recommends going with as little strap as possible—this assists in assuring you use proper technique. With many straps (for example, one spanning three fingers and one on your wrist), it really secures the paddle to your hand. You could pull your hand through the water backwards and the paddle would not fall off. You probably aren’t pulling backward, but if you do have flaws, you may not get the feedback you could be getting with a smaller strap. Imagine just a small strap over your middle finger. Now you have to swim and keep the paddle from slipping. It’s more challenging technique-wise, and proper technique will give the proper strength benefit from the paddles as well.
A pull float helps you develop upper body strength and focus on technique work, while providing buoyancy. We’ve chosen the TYR Classic Pull Float for its simple design and durability.
How to use: Place between upper thighs and hold there. Sometimes it is also used placed between the ankles. One tip to help with technique is to focus on good turnover with a high elbow pull underwater. Do not let good technique go out the window to achieve a higher turnover, but don’t let your turnover become too slow just because you have a little extra floatation!

How to use: Seal your mouth around the mouth piece and breath in and out. Many people will also find a nose plug very helpful. If you are going to do flip turns or submerge for anything else (to push off the wall) take a large breath in first, submerge while holding breath, blow out as you break the surface until all water is out of snorkel, and then resume normal breathing. Insert airflow restrictor valves on occasion as your ability level allows for lung capacity sets.

Other fitness trackers tested
The Edge is very bright and easy to see underwater. Like most trackers, it can register some of your movements in the pool and add them to your daily step count. The device will use these “steps” to estimate the distance traveled during your swimming workout. However, the Edge is not accurate in the water, nor can it track more advanced metrics, such as laps or strokes.
For Swim Students
Swimsuit. Take them shopping for their new swimsuit each year, and instruct them never to go swimming without wearing a swimsuit. Teach that swimming in clothes and shoes is unsafe.
Sunscreen. Protect their skin while they are in the pool or on the pool deck. A tight fitting swim shirt or large hat can also be used to protect the skin from too much sun.
Kickboard. For use when learning simple strokes and for kicking exercises, a foam kickboard (not inflatable) can be used in multiple ways during a swim lesson.
Good Health. Delay the lesson if your child has an illness or needs a nap.
Towel. And dry clothing to change into after the lesson is over.
For Swim Teachers
Swimming Pool. Learning to swim in lakes, streams and oceans can be unsafe, due to deep mud, currents and riptides. A shallow wading pool or ‘baby pool’ is the best place to start, if available. Otherwise, use the shallow end of a pool, preferably with walk-in steps. Aboveground pools or large spas can also be used for teaching toddlers to acclimate to water and learn basic swim skills.
Swimsuit. Set the example of never swimming without a swimsuit. Hat, but no sunglasses.
Enthusiasm. Bring a big smile and a big heart to each swim lesson, with some patience and empathy too!
Swim Lesson Plans. Use a binder that you can stand up, with plastic sheet holders to hold your lesson plan on the edge of the pool. our swim lesson plans.
Schedule. Just like other important things, schedule swim lessons for a solid time slot on your calendar. Once or twice per week, for 8-1weeks could be appropriate.
Don’t rush this step, even a small pool can seem intimidating to a young child. Standing in the shallow end, have the swim student sit on the edge of the pool, or on the pool steps, with their feet in the water, and start with a little splashing to get used to the temperature. Pull them up close to your chest when they are ready, and hold them closely while smiling and having fun, moving into the shallow end. Gently dip your body lower until the water is up to the child’s shoulders, bouncing up and down with a reassuring smile. Using pool floats to rest the child on while you stand, holding your student are helpful at many stages during beginning lessons.
Proceed deliberately slow; this can take several lessons to perfect. Gradually dip lower in the water, looking and smiling at your student until you can get up to their chin. Slowly dip both of your mouths below surface, and blow bubbles just under the surface. Once you’ve mastered the blowing bubbles by mouth, the next milestone is going over the nose, eventually dipping fully underwater and looking at each other without blowing bubbles, holding your breath for 1-seconds. Taking an exaggerated breath, or blowing in babies face can cue them to hold their breath.
Use both hands to support your student’s head and body while back floating and breathing. Stand behind them and try to encourage eye contact, to help keep your students head down and eyes back. A song or gentle rocking can help to calm anxiety. Float for 30-60 seconds, or until your student becomes fussy, gradually reducing your hand support.
Use both hands to support your student’s arms while front floating. Start with head up front floating, supporting your student. Work up to face-in-the-water front floating, which can take some time to master. It may help if you can sit on the floor with your student floating on the surface, within arm’s reach. A snorkel and mask can be used for older students.
A sophomore swimmer is not very coordinated with breathing around water, they may inhale some water and cough. When this happens, respond with smiles and encouragement, and resume when they regain their composure. Separately practice blowing bubbles and breath holding under water. Practice breathing while back floating and front floating, with support.
This has reminded me of a dog trick, but being able to roll over, from back to front and vice-versa, is an important early skill. Start with a supported and comfortable back float, and help your student to turn right by throwing right the left arm and pushing the left elbow back. Start with these mechanics and gently ease into the skill of rolling from a back float to a front float, with support, and the reverse, rolling from front to back. The student should be able to roll themselves easily, with breath control.
Jumping off of the side of the pool’s shallow end and into your waiting arms is both fun and scary for a young swimmer. You can start from a seated position if needed, and work your way up to jumping in towards you, submerging and resurfacing to your waiting arms. Teach them to jump out into the pool, away from the wall. You can practice on land, and show them how far they can jump.
It’s very exciting when your student begins to paddle short distances. To start you can provide a little lift to their swimsuit, or support under their belly. Perfecting the doggy paddle means slowing it down, taking deeper strokes and using a longer kick stride, for a less tiring stroke.
Floating on their back, teach your student to use their hands and wrists like fins, to paddle slowly (sculling) and help stay afloat easier. Add in some arm motion and the arms can be used like boat oars to move more water. Add in a back kick for faster propulsion, encouraging and demonstrating a proper back flutter kick.
As they gain more comfort and skills in the water, you can assist them with treading water skills by giving light support and helping them to coordinate their arms and legs to keep them afloat while using the least amount of energy.
This is advanced kicking, working on the involvement of the entire leg A true ‘flutter kick’ motion, is below the surface of the water, with fluidity and full leg coordination. We constantly work on kick improvements throughout Swim College, until it becomes automatic, or something the swimmer doesn’t have to think about.
The backstroke kick appears to be a mirror image of the front kick, but in fact there are small differences in the stride and rhythm of kicking while back floating. Different muscle groups are also used. Give the backstroke kick as much practice time as the straight kick. Playing slow rhythmic music can be used to help establish a tempo.
Water Rescue Basics
Review the rules. Praise your student (gold star!) when they show safe water behavior (entering/exiting safely, shutting a gate or door, or leaving the pool with you if you have to run inside the house). If appropriate for your child, instruct on what 91is and when it may be appropriate to dial 91for water rescue. Young children should be taught to find an adult for any kind of small or large emergency at the pool. If appropriate for your child, CPR demonstration and discussions can be held – no giggling!
The backstroke begins with a good back float and a solid back kick. Add to it a head-back shoulder rotation windmill motion, scooping lots of water on your down stroke. Breathe rhythmically with the stroke and really stretch out long to bring kicking, stroking and breathing together.
This is the kick used by water polo players to lift them out of water to their waists. A very powerful kick, but at much slower rates, it’s an easy way to tread water and conserve energy. Each leg moves in opposite rotation to the other, so that the upper leg is pumping up and down while the lower leg is swirling in a circular rotation from the knee to ankle.
The eggbeater kick has been said to be a modified breast stroke kick, which is also known as the frog kick, where the legs are drawn up and then squeezed together while being thrust out to full length. Practice kicking while holding onto and facing the wall or a large float. Small kickboards can be used for further training. Dry land bench training or videos can also be used, along with demonstrations.
Pushing off the wall and gliding, like superman, is a good place to start. The motion of the stroke used in breast stroke is a hard one for younger kids, and will take some practice. I think of the stroke motion as an upside down heart. Pull down from the top, then join hands below your chest and bring the arms back up the middle. Keep the torso flat, (no rotation) and bob up for air as you bring your arms back close the chest.
Deep Water Diver
Is your swim student ready for the deep end? If they can swim across the deep end, they should be able to dive down into the deep end, holding your hand or having you within arm’s reach. Practice letting out chest air to dive into deeper water, then push off the bottom to resurface rapidly. If you have a diving board available, you can practice proper dive technique, or teach diving safely from the edge into deep water.
For those that want to learn all of the major swimming strokes, even more than improving upon the other three, we have the butterfly stroke. Start with learning the butterfly kick, also known as the dolphin kick. Add the stroke by moving both arms simultaneously over the shoulders and pulling hard through the water while coming up for air. The butterfly stroke is arguably the most difficult coordinated movements in swimming, requiring practice to reach a basic stroke proficiency.

The Emicro One is, according to the company, the “world’s most lightweight and compact electric scooter” with a weight of just 7.5kg, making it an ideal mode of transport for the morning commute (to the train station, anyway!).
It also features a motion control sensor unique to the Emicro One, which allows rider to start and control their speed by body movement. The company claims that the motion control technology also reduces the battery consumption, and allows the scooter to be used ‘cable free’.
In terms of battery life, it features a fast charging battery that charges from flat to full in only an hour, with each charge providing you with 12km of scooting enjoyment.
It features three ride modes (eco, standard and sport) for better speed control and with a shock absorbent front wheel, this should provide its rider with a fairly comfortable ride. Unlike other scooters, it also features an LED display which shows both the current speed setting and the remaining battery charge, so you’re never left without power.
The Razor E100 is your basic entry level electric scooter for kids. Boasting a steel frame, the E100 can reach speeds of up to 10mph thanks to the electric motor, though it’s worth noting that riders will have to be travelling at 3mph before trying to use the electric motor, as it’s not powerful enough to move the scooter when stationary.
Riders will get around 40 minutes of continuous use before it requires a charge, although it’s not clear just how long the charging process will take.
It boasts twist-grip acceleration control for finer control over speed (opposed to a button, which others feature) and features an 8in front tyre for extra comfort when riding. It’s worth noting that the maximum weight is only 54kg though, so this scooter is only intended for children.
Razor’s E300 electric scooter is a decent mid-range scooter, and is suitable for both kids and teenagers (possibly even big kids too, but we’ll let you decide that!). The E300 boasts a speed improvement over the E100, reaching speeds of up to 15mph while matching the 40 minutes of constant use that the E100 offers.
The E300 also features a ‘super size’ deck and frame, meaning the rider can stand firmly with both feet. It also features a twist throttle for finer control over speed, and a retractable kickstand so you don’t have to leave your scooter on its side when not in use.
The wider 25.4cm tyres should provide a comfortable and smooth ride, and the maximum weight limit for the E300 is 100kg.
Zinc Volt 120
The Zinc Volt 120 is another great electric scooter. It boasts top speeds of 12mph, and although we’re not quite sure how long/far you’ll get from a single charge, the scooter features a ‘fast’ recharge time.

Prepare Before You Go
First, find a pool and gather up your gear. Most large public pools will have at least a few lanes available for lap swimming, and you’re a lot more likely to have the place to yourself if you go at a slow time during the school semester. Once you’ve started swimming workouts, you’ll probably start noticing that you have room for improvement. If you get tired easily, the problem isn’t necessarily your endurance. In swimming, good technique is important so you’re not fighting against the water any more than you have to.
The swimming lessons and clubs we mentioned earlier are great ways to work on your freestyle or other strokes. They’re also a good place to start to learn competition-oriented skills like how to dive in at the start of a race, and how to do those somersault-looking flip turns to save time when you need to turn around.
If you’re interested in competition, masters teams organise swim meets, and you don’t have to be an expert swimmer to participate and have fun. Or for a different kind of goal, you can look towards triathlon training or swimming-only endurance events, where swimmers do their thing in open water such as at the beach. As with any type of exercise, you can choose swimming goals that you like, develop a plan to train toward those goals and improve the skills and fitness you need to keep working toward your goal and having fun. But first, you begin by jumping into the pool.
