Most water shoes don’t have all the extra padding that you will find with regular street sneakers. However, a great pair of water shoes will not require you to make a tradeoff between function and comfort. A well-constructed pair of aquatic shoes will give you the comfort you need – from the sole to the upper materials — so that you can focus on your water activities.

The key to great fitting water shoes is that they should fit snug, but not too tight that they become uncomfortable to wear. The binding around your ankles should keep your feet engaged in the water shoe, thereby reducing the amount your foot slides around when wet.
WHY CHOOSE FINS
The purpose of fins is to help you to get propulsion in order to get into the wave early. They also help you to paddle out through the surf quicker too. Shorter bladed fins give you smaller, quicker and deeper burst kick and are also good for quick release for spins etc. Longer bladed fins offer a bit more control and a re good for long paddle outs. the best thing to look for is somethong in the middle length wise.

THE CORRECT FIT
Comfort is everything in a fin. A good fin is like a good pair of walking boots, buy right and you’ll be comfortable and get all the performance you need. When buying a fin the thing to keep high on your agenda is the fit. You are looking to get a snug fit, not too tight. If your foot is bent up inside the fin you will end up getting cramp. Equally, if your toes are pressed against the end of the fin pocket it can get uncomfortable. Too loose a fin will flap around and cause fin rub and give you less power.
Remember that fins will loosen with use to some degree and the socks always stretch a bit too. Whatever the fit feels like dry will be different in the water.
Wetsuits can be a substantial investment, and other than the bike purchase, likely the largest one you will make for triathlon. If you only plan to do one triathlon, you might want to rent one from a local tri shop, or borrow from a friend. If you borrow, just be sure that you get one that fits well. A poorly-fitting wetsuit can actually make matters worse when you are in the water.

Many racers will choose to go sockless, making the transition and reducing the risk of running in wet socks (i.e. blister-creators) if they don’t dry properly after the swim or are racing in wet conditions. Size and Fit
For the correct size, start with your shoe size. Unfortunately, scuba boots only come in whole sizes so if you are a half size, try rounding up as a start.
Sizes for scuba booties are quoted in mens sizes. So women should subtract (possibly 2) size from their shoe size as a starting point (womans size = mens size 6).
Scuba dive boots should fit similar to a shoe, a bit snug but not too tight and not too loose. Your toes should not be curled up in the end of the boot. If this happens, go a size up. Hopefully, your feet won’t be swimming in them.
Care and Maintenance
Caring for your dive boots is pretty much the same as caring for your wetsuit.
Soak – Soak your scuba booties for about 1minutes when you get back home, or better yet, back to the hotel. You can also use a special wet suit shampoo at this stage (baby shampoo is said to work just as well). You should shampoo your dive boots every once in a while for best results.
Inspect for Damage – Before you store your scuba booties for the next dive vacation, check for any rips or tears. They are much easier to fix while small (see my page on wetsuit repair for repair tips.)
Store Properly – Do not crumple boots up and shove them in a drawer. This can crease the boots and cause them to lose some of its insulation effectiveness
Tidbits – Do not store or dry your scuba booties in direct sunlight. Also, do not use aerosol spray near your dive boots as this can degrade the neoprene. The same goes for car exhaust so the garage is not the place to store your boots. And last but not least, do not put a dive boots in the dryer. I know it sounds obvious, but people have actually done this. You’ve been warned.

For most efficiency and ease, triathlon specific clothing is your best choice. Triathlon specific clothing includes shorts, tops and racesuits. They are designed to wear throughout the whole race, including the swim, bike and run. The shorts or racesuits have tri specific chamois that are designed to provide comfort on the bike leg, but not soak up much water during the swim or provide discomfort during the run. They use fabrics and materials that dry quickly and provide excellent moisture transfer and breathability for temperature regulation. Some triathlon clothing options go even further to provide compression to increase blood circulation and muscle support. A pure cycling short chamois will asbsorb too much water and is too big to wear while running. Tri specific clothing should fit snugly as to prevent drag and to limit stretching from water during the swim portion of the race. Although tri specific clothing is a better choice, it is not required to use in a triathlon. This would require changing during the transitions between the swim to run and for the bike to run transition.

Most triathlons begin with the swim. This gives you time to put on your wetsuit if you are using one, and to get in the water to get accustomed to the temperature without rushing. Typical gear for the swim include: Triathlon or swimming wetsuit, goggles, swim cap, anti chafing stick, anti fog, ear plugs, and nose plugs. For colder swim races swim socks, skullcaps and thermal swim gloves may be advised.
Depending on the water temperature, a triathlon (Or swimming) wetsuit may be advised. Please note, a wetsuit for surfing or diving may actually slow you down due to the loss in flexibility and slickness, so it is highly recommended to only use a triathlon wetsuit which is specific for swimming. In general, wetsuits will provide warmth in cool water conditions, add bouyancy, and reduce drag to improve swim time. In warm water conditions above 84F, wetsuits are not allowed by USAT. There are many types of triathlon wetuits and varying types and thicknesses of neopreneused to achieve different technical aspects of the wetsuit. Sleeveless wetsuits are available for warmer water swims and for those that prefer completely free arms. Long sleeve wetsuits will provide the swimmer with added warmth and added bouyancy.
Proper fit is essential to have a good experience using a triathlon wetsuit. Too big, and the wetsuit will fill with too much water and slow you down. Too tight and it will be uncomfortable and restrictive. Different brands all fit differently. Some brands are suitable for larger frames and some seem to suit slighter frames. It can be challenging to put on a wetsuit as they need to fit very tight. Be prepared to spend a little time putting it on correctly. A wetsuit should be as tight as possible without being restrictive. Almost like a second skin. There should be no gapping in the crotch or under arm regions. Your breathing and arms stroke motions should not be restricted. Even with proper fit, some people may get chafing on the neck or arm hole (Sleeveless), so it is advised to use an anti-chafing product such as Bodyglide or Trislide. Also, keep in mind that the triathlon wetsuits have more delicate neoprene than traditional surf wetsuits and care should be take not to tear with sharp objects or fingernails. Wetsuit Care: After use, rinse the wetsuit inside and out with fresh water, then hang it inside out to dry. In general, a wetsuit should be stored inside out when not in use. This will protect it from harmful UV rays that can damage the neoprene rubber and minimize nicking and tearing the wetsuit. If you will be storing for a long period of time, then it is recommended to store it flat, lighhlty folded and not on the hanger as it may cause indentions at the arms from the hanger. Also, do not store it in an airtight bag or container or it may get moldy.

Swim Caps reduce friction and drag to improve swim performance. Swim caps can also provide some warmth and add visibility if bright colors are chosen. For those that swim in open water, bright colors are a good choice. In general, swim caps are usually provided by the race organizers with specific colors for each wave/age and gender group. Triathlon LAB provides both Latex and Silicone swim caps. Latex caps are less expensive than the Silicone variety. The silicone caps are thicker and more durable than the latex. Silicone caps are easier to put on than Latex as they don’t stick together as much as the Latex caps.
Goggles are an essential item for triathlons. Goggles will enable you to see better under water and with more comfort. Goggles will also will provide physical and UV ray protection for your eyes. Goggles are designed for different light and water conditions. Swimming in the ocean where you will be required to go through waves will benefit from hybrid or mask style goggles. The larger surface will disperse the pressure from the waves over a larger surface area, and are less likely to be knocked of your face. Smaller size goggles are suitable for pool and lake swimming. Light conditions should be considered when choosing the lens. For low light conditions, clear lens work well. For outdoor and sunny conditions, choose goggles with light tints.
Fit is very important for goggles. If the fit is incorrect, your goggles will leak. For choosing your goggles, look at your face and determine if you have a narrow face ir wide face. How far apart are your eyes and how wide is your nose bridge. If you tend to have close set eyes or a small face, you will need the small sized frame. Most adults fit in the regular size frames.

Tip: It’s a good idea to have an extra pair of goggles on hand in case a strap breaks, etc. Plus bring a pair with different shades of lenses to account for different lighting conditions you may encounter on race day.
Earplugs and Nose Clips will help keep water out of your ears and nose. There are various types of earplugs. There are the silicone moldable earplugs, molded earplugs, and then conical ear plugs.
If you are just starting triathlon, and are not sure you will be a long term triathlete, then a road bike is probably your best choice as it is more practical for hills, and commuting and non-triathlon related cycling. A few added accessories can be added to your road bike to improve your aerodynamics and speed, such as clip on aerobars and disc wheels.
If you are going to be participating in longer triathlons, and want more speed, then a tri bike would probably be a great fit for you. The triathlon or TT bike has different geometry designed to put you in an aero position for improved aerodynamics and efficiency. In addition, the geometry change works your leg muscles differently If you are a serious triathlete, you will probably want both road and a tri bike in your arsenal. You will be spending a lot of time on the bike training and will probably appreciate having both options for different conditions and rides. After all, at this point, triathlon is more than just a sport, it is a passion and a lifestyle. We get it.
Cycling shoes are designed to be efficient in power transfer from leg to bike. This is accomplished witha stiff sole design and using clips on the bottom of the shoes that attach directly to the bike pedals. Beginners will sometimes use toe straps on pedals which are used with regular running shoes. However, toe straps are not as efficient as clip on cycling shoes and energy will be wasted. There are cycling specific shoes and cycling tri shoes. The main difference is that cycling shoes designed for triathlons are easier to take off because of the wider single or double strap system. In addition, they typically are seamless inside to make it possible to wear without sock. Tri specific cycling shoes will also usually have a loop in the back of the shoe to aid in pulling off the shoe during tranisition to the run..

Helmets are absolutely necessary to participate in traithlons. They are required during the triathlon, and should always be worn during cycling to protect your head in case of an accident. There are many types of helmets to choose from. Helmets with more vents will be cooler and more comfortable in warm weather conditions. For longer triathlons where you will be spending a long time on the bike in aero position, you may want to consider an aero helmet. These helmets are designed to reduce drag and increase cycling speed. For short triathlons and regular cycling, a road helmet is probably the best choice.
Don’t forget your sunglasses in your transition area. Sunglasses are important to use as they offer your eyes protection from the wind, debris, UV rays and glare. Your best choices are sport sunglasses with light frames and the correct shape that will be compatible with your bike helmet. Choose your lens type based on your need. Some sunglasses come with multiple lenses for different light conditions. Some come with photochromatic lenses which change tint based on light conditions, which are very convenient as there is no need to change out lenses with changing light conditions.
Tools and Tire Repair
It is important to have spare tubes on hand and the tools required to change or repair a tube in case you get a flat on the course. Some triathlons have race support on the course and can help change out flat tires, but it is better to be prepared in case help is unavailale. Make sure you know how to change a tube. Not required, but are designed to offer comfort and sometimes warmth. Cycling gloves are designed to reduce pressure on the Median and Ulner nerves. If you are spending extened time on the bike, then cycling gloves are highly recommended. Cycling gloves come in full fingered or half fingered gloves. The full fingered gloves are ideal for cold weather conditions, where as the half fingered gloves are the best choice for warmer weather.
Choosing the right running shoe is not simple. There are many different philosphies as to the best running form, which coincide with different types of run shoes. There are three main types of foot strikes: Heel strike, midsole strike and forefoot strike. The shoe drop typically dictates which type of foot strike. Zero drop or low drop shoes will promote a midsole or forefoot strike, and shoes with a larger heel drop will promote a heel strike. Some philosphies tout zero drop shoes to create a more natural almost barefoot run style. Others prefer more cushioning in the heel as they prefer a heel strike technique. In addition, there are stability shoes designed for pronators. Your shoe choice will depend on your running philosophy and what works best for you. There are running shoes designed for triathlons. Typical features you will find are seamless interiors to provide comfort while running without socks. Bungee laces or cord locks are a good lace option as you do not have to worry about laces becoming untied during your run and they are quick to put on and tighten.

Run hats or visors provide protection for your eyes from sun and rain. Some hats and visors have built in sweat bands to help keep sweat out of your eyes. Most run hats are made out of breathable cool fabric.
Protecting your skin from sun damage is important. Sunscreen that is designed to stay on during excercise is important, or it will just sweat off. And while you want to protect your skin from harmful UV rays, which cause cancer and premature aging, you should also care if the sunscreen itself is damaging to your body due to harmful chemicals. Consider a sunscreen that is certified to be free of biological harmful ingredients. Be sure to apply according to the directions on the bottle prior to the swim, then re-apply after the swim and before the run. Even though a sunscreen may be labeled as waterproof, it may still need re-application due to sweating or rubbing.
Leading up to the triathlon, make sure you stay hydrated. Hydration is best not left till right before the race, but as a steady process. Muscles are more prone to injury and cramping when you are dehydrated. When you are dehydrated, you will fatigue faster. For the night before the triathlon, don’t eat processed or foods high in fat or fiber as they take longer to digest. Stick with foods you are familiar with and don’t try anything new. You don’t want any digestive surprises during your race.
Triathlon compression clothing is designed to improve blood flow throughout your body and to provide muscle support. True compression clothing should have a graduated compression that will help push blood from the extremeties to your core and back to the heart. This is more pronounced when you are not moving and why compression clothing is especially good for recovery and why it is good for blood circulation. During activity, the compression clothing will provide muscle support and help push out lactic acid from your muscles to reduce fatigue. Medical compression clothing is not designed for triathlons and is not recommended for use during activity.

TRACTION & SUPPORT
Water shoes feature specially designed tread for optimal traction on slippery surfaces, including boat docks, decks and water equipment. Their rubber outsoles also offer a better grip on these wet surfaces.
While slip-on styles are great for beach wear and underwater use, they don’t offer the same ankle support as their lace-up counterparts, which are more suitable for trekking through trails, streams and creek beds.
LIGHTWEIGHT & QUICK DRYING
You shouldn’t feel as if you have two anchors on your feet. Non-water shoes often get heavy when waterlogged, which disrupts the smooth, fluid movements you’re looking for in underwater footwear and makes for added weight when you aren’t submerged. Water shoes, on the other hand, are designed to be worn on both underwater and dry surfaces. Sipped outsoles help move water to the side when you make contact with the ground—much like a tire—making them great for traction, too.
Regular shoes also absorb and retain water because they aren’t made to drain the same, so you’ll experience plenty of squishiness and discomfort once you do get out of the water. This is a recipe for blisters and potential unwanted odor and mold growth in your shoes. A good pair of water shoes will be made of well-ventilated fabrics and have multiple drainage points and perforations to help water drain from the shoe and prevent these nuisances.
COMFORT & WARMTH
Water shoes are flexible and made with mesh material for enhanced breathability, which helps keep feet cool. This also allows for improved water flow when submerged and better drainage when out of the water.

Many outdoor retailers now stock ‘trekking shoes’. They may look and feel very comfortable but they do not provide the ankle support offered by boots. Trekking shoes are okay for urban travel, but if you intend to do any walking on uneven terrain, then ankle support is essential to greatly reduce the risk of an injury.

If you prefer to lace up your own boots the good ol’ fashioned way, traditional laces are the way to go. They give you full freedom to lace up however you like, say, if you prefer the tongue a little looser and the lower zone snug and tight. The no-BS approach to traditional laces also puts these boots in a more affordable category, if budget is a factor.
So you’ve determined a few boot models that fit your needs. Now it’s important to get fitted properly before trying them on. Your street shoe size isn’t always the same as your snowboard boot size, so don’t assume you’ll be slipping your feet into the same size as your gym shoes. Have a salesperson measure your feet and recommend a size to try.
Once you’ve got a few pairs from the shelves, pull on a pair of real snowboard socks. (Read: no cotton!) A single pair of over-the-calf wool or synthetic blend socks are the best for wicking away moisture and keeping your feet dry and warm when snowboarding.
With your foot in the boot, cinch up the inner lining so it’s snug around your whole foot. Then start working on the outer laces, again ensuring that the laces are snug, but not overly tight, all the way down your foot. If you’re new to riding, have a salesperson help you so you can gauge what that feels like.
It’s not always immediately obvious if the boot fits your foot or not. Once you’ve got a pair laced up, give ‘em a flex test by lunging around the store, rocking back and forth from heels to toes and spending 5-minutes going through a mental checklist of requirements. (No need to feel weird doing a set of walking lunges through the snowboard aisle—it’s totally normal.)
First off, your toes should barely touch the end of the boots. If they’re curled in the toe box or swimming around, ask to try on a different size. Additionally, if you feel anything uncomfortable right off the bat—like pressure points or too narrow of a width—chances are, they’ll only bother you even more on the hill. So again, ask to try a different style or size until you find one that feels good while standing normally.
Take into consideration that your boots will pack out and soften up the more you ride.
Once you’ve got a pair of boots that fit well on first impression, start busting out some more lunges. If your heel lifts up, try the simplest solution first: tighten the laces and try again. But if your ankles and heels are still swimming around, consider trying a different style or size. Take note of how they flex. Are they too stiff? Too soft? Remember that different boots are built for different riding styles, so choose a pair that fits your dominant riding style. Also know that your boots will pack out and soften up the more times you ride, so take that into consideration.

If you want to take the crème de la crème home, you have to ensure that you place waterproofness as you first consideration. Of course, the word ‘waterproof” in the name “waterproof socks” isn’t a decoration or some useless prefix meant to make the name longer. The word “waterproof” implies that the socks have to inhibit water from getting to your feet.
For that reason, you have to take it upon yourself to test and calculate the duration within which the socks can stop water from affecting your feet. And, of course, the time should be reasonable.
The material used in the construction of waterproof socks affects how sturdy and durable it becomes. It’s prudent that you take note of the material used before making a purchase. This will spare you the headache of having to make returns later after experiencing numerous disappointments. I think I should have placed comfort as the number one priority. Without comfort, I doubt if anyone would be willing to engage in any activity. This means that you have to ensure that you go for the waterproof socks which secure your feet while at the same time keeping them comfortable.
We cannot overlook the price; no matter where we look at the issue from. The old adage “Cheap is expensive” seems to hold waters to date. For that reason, if spending a few more bucks will save you the hassle of frequenting the market looking for replacements; then I’d advise you to do it.
