I must say I am quite a fan of weight racks, so when the question “What are the best weight racks available on the market?” came to my mind, I excitedly started gathering information together with personal experience to write this article in the hope that it may help you find the suitable weight racks.

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy weight racks, right? No!

Back support positions

One negative feature in these comparisons was the range of back support positions. The PowerBlock gives you settings to choose from, while the other two benches give you 7.

If you need a decline setting, or want a more compact weight bench, we recommend the Body Solid PFID125X. Its 500 lb capacity is similar to the PowerBlock, and the leg brace means decline exercises are now an option.

It’s a competitive price range, featuring big name brands, such as Bowflex, Valor Fitness, XMark, Nautilus, and Body Solid. The Ironmaster Super Bench is also a popular bestseller.

Likewise, the Valor Fitness DD-FID bench has some excellent attachment options, high quality padding, and full range of positions. But its 650 lb capacity is still lower than many benches in this price range.

However, if this weight capacity supports years of future strength gains for you, then it could be the perfect choice.

Gold’s Gym

Gold’s Gym is a name synonymous with bodybuilding. But their weight benches have never gained the same popularity as Bowflex or Body Solid.

Their bestseller is the XRS20 Weight Bench, with a steel tube frame and preacher curl pad for bicep exercises. You also benefit from a freestanding squat rack with adjustable safety spotters, which accompanies the workout bench.

Gold’s produce several other adjustable weight benches, including the XR 6.1, XR 6.0, and XR 5.They also produce an Olympic weight bench (XR10.1) and a Slant Bench (XR 5.9), which features a range of decline positions for ab workouts.

Ironmaster

Although they only produce one workout bench, the Ironmaster Super Bench is a careful balance of strength and affordability.

The back support can be adjusted from decline to upright, and features heavy-duty padding for added comfort.

But what makes this weight bench special is the range of attachment options. You can buy a crunch sit-up attachment, dip handle attachment, preacher curl attachment, and even a hypercore attachment. This is useful for performing hyperextensions, to strengthen your core and lower back.

A chin-up attachment, leg curl attachment, and cable tower attachment are also available for added upper body exercises.

Marcy are perhaps best known for their MD-9010G Smith Machine, which also includes one of their multi-function weight benches.

Marcy have an excellent reputation for customer service and build quality. Their fitness equipment line includes folding weight benches, Olympic weight benches (MD-857), and even a bench with a pec fly attachment (MD-389).

Features

The bench can adjust to two different positions when working out. Hence you will not slip as you exercise. ​The construction is the next best feature as this Bowflex model is constructed out of commercial quality steel which makes it a heavy duty bench which can handle heavy weight people. ​It has durable upholstery which is easy to wipe and clean after you exercise and a good base that offers great balance and stability.

Very easy to assemble the parts, and most people say that it took them at least 30 minutes.

Half Racks

Footprint of the half rack is somewhat same as that of a power rack, unlike a squat rack or squat stand that have smaller footprints.

Barbell bar

Barbells are designed to help increase strength. Although they are small in size, they come with weights that you lift to exercise your muscles. Barbell bars are therefore the difference between the two weights.

Barbells are adjustable in a manner that you can increase or reduce the size of the barbell bar to suit your set objectives. Lifting can be done either with your hand, hands or feet. They are easily portable and efficient.

Weight plates

Workout Stations

Weight benches already provide a natural plethora of exercises but some do come with useful additions to enhance them a bit further. A lot of machines now come with a leg developer attachment at the front, you can use this for leg curls and leg extensions to train your hamstrings and quadriceps, these are great movements for really isolating your legs muscles so it’s worth looking out for.

The preacher pad is another useful component, you can normally find them towards the front and are ideal for focusing your biceps and forearms, you can use either free weights or straight bars for preacher curls but either will give you that satisfying deep burn.

Lat towers or high pulley stations have started to feature more frequently in recent years; they also fit at the front and can be used not just for lat pulldowns but also for tricep pushdowns, high ab crunches, single arm cable crossovers, woodchoppers and a ton of other movements. They let you use your imagination; you can also use different universal gym attachments to further expand your workout diversity.

Upholstery

Probably not the first thing that springs to mind but you don’t want to feel like you’re resting on plywood when you have a bar loaded with weights above your head, it’s not pleasant. The easiest way to avoid this just means taking a quick look at the back pad and seat pad to make sure the upholstery isn’t thin, it should be at least an inch thick and also box stitched to stop it falling apart when it’s gets a bit of wear and tear.

Safety is paramount with weight training so it’s key to ensure that you’re equipment provides this, if you’re looking for a bench with a rack then it should be using safety catchers (spotter catchers). These work by positioning the catches lower down than your normal weight rests, they only come into use if you can’t return the weight to the normal rests, you just let the bar down onto the safety catchers instead so that you’re not in a position where you have no means of getting the bar up or away from you.

Weights

No matter what weight bench you’re looking at you’re going to need some weights to go with it, if you’re after a utility bench then a simple pair of adjustable dumbbells is going to be your cheapest and best bet, you can just take weight plates on and off the dumbbell bars to customise the amount of weight you want. A bench with a rack is going to need a little more, you’ll need a weight set with a barbell, an important point to note is to make sure that the length of the barbell is wide enough to fit the width of the rack otherwise it’s not going to be compatible. The Different Sizes of Weight Plates

If you are considering purchasing weight plates, for either home or commercial use, it’s incredibly important to understand the different discs that are available.

Olympic Discs  a standard size across the fitness industry, are known as Olympic because of the 2″ diameter centre hole. They fit all commercial bars and most plate loaded gym equipment ranges such as our Sterling range.

Standard Discs generally considered for most home gyms, only have a 1″ diameter hole. Standard weight plates will not fit on an Olympic bar.

Rubber Weight Plates

Rubber weight plates are exactly the same as cast iron weight plates, but with an extra layer of rubber coating for safety, protection and longevity. The rubber coating helps both the weight plate and the floor to a certain degree, and will ensure that the plates are longer lasting and harder wearing.

One step up within this section is urethane coated plates. These are generally the same dimensions and shape as rubber plates, but are much more durable and less susceptible to markings and cosmetic damage. As well as marking less easily, these plates will not mark your floor, walls and other equipment like rubber plates will. They also have the benefit of not offgassing, which some rubber products do in gym environments creating an often unpleasant smell.

With rubber coated weight plates, it is quite common to see terms like “non-standard Olympic plates”. Non-standard Olympic plates are plates which are made to fit Olympic sized bars but have a reduced circumference when compared with a traditional Olympic weight plate. The main thing which makes a plate non-standard is the presence of grips, which are cut into the plate making them easier to lift off the ground, perform exercises without a bar and to place back in the weight rack.

Technique Bumper Weight Plates

Demand for bumper plates has been increasing over recent years due to growing popularity of Olympic lifting, some of which can be attributed to a rise in the number of people participating in CrossFit training.

A bumper plate is a solid rubber weight disc which can be safely used for performing Olympic lifts and can be dropped from a height during exercises like snatches and presses. The purpose of bumpers is to create a safe environment and allow certain exercises to be performed without the risk of damages to the floor, equipment or athlete.

Strength and conditioning coaches and gyms have long been using Olympic lifts in training, and weightlifting as a sport relies upon this core set of movements that require the use of bumper plates.

The first kind of bumper plate available is a technique plate. These are very basic and made from a simple single piece of rubber, without a metal ring around the hole. These only come in light weights and are perfect for introducing beginners to Olympic lifts and helping athletes improve their technique. Facilities tend only to have a small set of technique plates and they are normally only produced in 2.5kg and 5kg weights, otherwise training or competition plates would be used.

Training Bumper Weight Plates

Training bumper plates can vary slightly in depth but will all, for the most part, be a similar diameter. Top manufacturers like Eleiko and Zhangkong produce training plates which are the exact dimensions of competition weightlifting plates.

More affordable training bumper plates may not be the exact depth of IWF competition plates, however they will, for the most part, stand up the Olympic lifting requirements of a specialist facility, commercial gym or CrossFit box. Training plates usually come in black or are colour coded by weight.

Competition Bumper Plates

The factor which separates Olympic competition plates from training plates and all other kinds of free weights is the calibration. Official IWF Competition rules mean that plates need to be accurate to +0.1% and -0.05%. This means that production of a 25kg plate only has a 2gram margin for error. The result is that Competition bumper plates are incredibly accurate and consistent, so the weight you are lifting is absolutely what you think it is. Fractional Plates

Within our Zhangkong range we also have fractional (or incremental) plates. These include 0.5kg. 1kg, 1.5kg. 2kg, 2.5kg, and 5kg discs. The 0.5-1.5kg also have no metal insert within the centre circle. This is ideal when in competition, it means you can add these on the end without removing the cuff. The grip in the inner circle sticks to the bar and does not move, keeping the other plates in place.

Powerlifting plates

These plates generally come in cast iron, steel or a chromed metal. They are thinner than the plates listed above as they allow for more weight to be added to the bar, specifically in the sport of powerlifting. This is important to elite lifters and more advanced training centres as it keeps the discs closer to your centre of gravity eliminating any whip on the squat.

Whip of the Bar

The “whip” is the common term for the ends of the bar bouncing at the end of a repetition, or a phase of a lift. The lifter will be stationary, but the ends of the bar will be moving.

Experienced lifters can use this during certain transitions in their lifts. For example, between the clean and jerk they can bounce the bar off their chest and propel the bar up by using the momentum of the bend coming upward into the jerk position.

The main factors in determining the amount of whip are the material from which the bar is made, and the diameter of the bar.

The thickness of the plates can also effect the whip that the user can generate. For example, bumper plates, spreading the load on the collar of the bar, will make the bar behave in a completely different to the way it will behave with calibrated weight plates, which take up less collar space.

Knurling

Knurling is made from two sets of diagonal grooves cut into the barbell, usually going in opposite directions. This forms tiny diamond shapes, which dig into the skin on your hands when you hold the bar and assist with grip.

The width and depth of these grooves will determine how “aggressive” the knurling is on the barbell.

More aggressive knurling is primarily to assist with heavy deadlifts, where grip failure is the most likely.

The further in the knurling comes, the narrower you can effectively grip the bar. Weight lifting bars designed for powerlifting tend to have more knurling towards the centre of the bar for the use of sumo lifters who grip inside of what would be a normal grip for a conventional deadlift or clean.

A portion of knurling in the centre of the bar (known as central knurling) helps with grip on your back during squats. Both IWF (International Weightlifting Federation) and the IPF (International Powerlifting Federation) specify that a men’s barbell should have this.

Some specialised squat bars have a very wide central knurling to allow for use by larger men.

As mentioned earlier, the knurling is less aggressive on men’s Olympic bars, as when they catch a clean they don’t want aggressive knurling at the neck, but it is still there to assist with squats.

A woman’s weight lifting bar has no centre knurling. If central knurling is required during squats then using a male bar is preferable. The wider bar will also make squatting more comfortable on the upper back.

Olympic Weight Lifting Bars

Olympic weight lifting barbells are designed for the two main Olympic lifts – the snatch, and clean & jerk.

Olympic bars are usually smaller in diameter, but only by 1mm. However, this makes a difference to your grip strength.

The knurling on Olympic weight lifting  bars is not as aggressive as other weight lifting bars. There must be enough to provide a good grip, but not so much that it rips your hands apart when the bar spins in your hand during the catch phases of the lifts.

Knurling is marked out for the snatch lift and is further apart than a power bar which is marked out for the bench press.

Olympic bars also require collars that spin. The spin on the bar deadens the rotational force of the barbell during the pull and catch phases of an Olympic lift (during snatch and clean) or the dip and drive (jerk or push press) reducing the impact on your wrists and shoulders.

Olympic bars also require more bend and flexibility. This is sometimes called the whip (stored elastic energy), which helps during the initial pull and catch phase of the lift to avoid unnecessary damage to your collarbones.

Bars which have achieved IWF accreditation are widely recognised as the best on the market (with the most accurate tolerance in relation to the bar’s weight) and only these types of bar are sanctioned for use in international competition. View IWF accredited bars.

Powerlifting Bars

Weight lifting barbells for powerlifting are designed for the big three lifting exercises: Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift.

Knurling on powerlifting bars is much more aggressive to help the lifter grip the bar during heavier attempts.

The knurling comes in further than an Olympic bar to allow for narrower grips during deadlifts and a more secure squat.

Powerlifting barbells are rigid, stiff bars, and therefore do not deform, when compared to Olympic bars, under load (or whip). This means they would be a poor choice for Olympic Lifts – you will feel the difference if you catch a clean slightly wrong with a power bar. It sometimes feels like your collar bones have been hit with a sledgehammer!

Specialised deadlifting bars are available that are longer and have more whip. This means the end plates are left on the ground for longer, which allows the lifter to get into a stronger position before the full load comes off the floor.

Hybrid, Training & Multipurpose Weight Lifting Bars

Hybrid weightlifting bars are useful for gyms, CrossFit boxes and facilities that offer both Olympic weight lifting and Powerlifting.

Hybrid weight lifting barbells are great for beginner and intermediate weight lifters as they have the characteristics of both a powerlifting and Olympic weight lifting bar.

Hybrid barbells usually have two sets of fine knurling markings to accommodate for both Olympic lifting and power lifting standards.

Hex Trap Bar

The Hex Bar (or Trap bar) is an interesting barbell variation that is most commonly used in the gym for deadlifting as an alternative to the traditional straight bar deadlift. Many people prefer the trap bar deadlift because due to the load being placed in line with the user rather than off centre it puts less stress on the lumbar curve especially at the start of the movement. This makes it a common choice for users with back issues. Hex bars are normally 6ft or 7ft long and weigh around 25kg and 30kg respectively.

EZ-Curl Bar

The EZ Curl bar is a shorter barbell variation which tends to be quite light weight and has a distinctive jagged shape. The advantages of this type of bar tend to be felt by users who experience discomfort in their wrists when using a straight bar for curls (the angle of the EZ Curl bar lets them grip the bar in a more natural position).

Fixed Barbells

Fixed barbells are more commonly found in a health club, high street gym setting than in any sports performance, weightlifting or powerlifting facility. These are a durable convenience item that doesn’t require any set-up time like adding collars or plates. Fixed barbells are generally around 110mm long and range in weights from 5kg up to 45kg.

How to choose a bike rack

The first question is how far and how frequently do you need to carry bikes? Then what type of bikes, and how many bikes you need to carry. Which vehicle — or vehicles — do you have, and will you be taking a mixture of bikes? Are they heavy, do they have thru-axles, and will they be getting dirty?

The main types of bike rack are hitch-mounted, roof-mounted and strap-mounted

The next question is how do you want to carry the bikes? On top of the vehicle? Off the back? Does your vehicle have a receiver hitch? Bike’s front wheel on or off? Another thing to consider is if you want or need to carry other sporting equipment.

Bikes vary widely in cost, style, size and weight too, all of which should be factors when looking for a means of transporting them. You probably won’t want to risk carrying your expensive super bike on a rack that costs less than one of its ultra-light tires.

Hitch-mounted

Hitch-mounted bike racks connect to a 1/4in or 2in receiver hitch that is mounted to your vehicle. They’re usually more expensive than other bike rack styles, but the ease of loading and unloading bikes, and not having to lift bikes onto the vehicle’s roof, make them a popular option.

Most feature locks that lock the bike to the rack and the rack to the vehicle. Clever designs enable almost one-handed fitting, while hinged load sections provide access to the boot/tailgate of the vehicle without having to remove the bikes. 

As a basic rule, the more features a rack has such as built-in locks, repair stands, lightweight materials, etc., the more it costs. You also need a hitch on your vehicle, which can be an extra expense if you don’t already have one, and some vehicles are only compatible with 1/4in hitches, which typically limit the rack to two bikes instead of four or five bikes as with a 2in hitch.

Roof-mounted

Most roof racks consist of feet that attach to your vehicle’s roof, and cross bars that the accessories attach to. Bike racks for roof racks vary between ones that require front wheel removal and racks that allow both wheels to remain on the bike.

Front wheel removal keeps the bike lower (great for tall SUVs), can be easier and lighter to load, and is the classic way of hauling bikes up top. Bike racks that keep both wheels on the bike are taller, generally cost more, and can be less stable. Either option likely uses integrated locks to lock your bike to the rack. And of course the rack is locked to the bars, and the bars are locked to your vehicle.

There are more simple roof-mounted bike racks available that don’t require a dedicated base bar set up, such as the Sea Sucker rack (shown below) that uses suction cups to attach to your car, and roof-mounted bike racks that attach to your vehicle’s factory installed roof rack.

While not permanent, roof racks generally stay on your vehicle all the time as they are hugely versatile. Being able to add and remove sport-specific accessories lets you carry bikes, kayaks, skis, SUP boards, cargo boxes, etc. Basically any big, bulky item is fair game for a roof rack, even ladders, lumber, and other non-sports items. 

Roof racks can be used for a huge variety of gear-hauling duties

Pros: Super versatile for all kinds of gear hauling. One of the most secure racks available. Doesn’t hinder access to any doors/boot/hatch/tailgate.

Cons: Drive under something low if you’ve forgotten about your bikes and you could wreck all your bikes and damage your vehicle. You’re also adding aero-drag to your vehicle, so fuel consumption will likely increase.

Trunk-mounted

Trunk-mounted racks tend to be the least expensive option, and the least secure. The main thing holding them to your vehicle is a bunch of straps that hook around the lip of your vehicle’s trunk/hatchback/bumper.

Such racks are usually highly adjustable, so you can fit them to the rear of almost any vehicle. Rubber or foam ‘feet’ grip the vehicle, with the whole unit pulled taught and secured by the straps. This is the most affordable style of rack, but relies heavily on it being fitted properly and the hooks that hold the straps to the vehicle can sometimes damage paintwork.

Low-end trunk racks typically don’t have a way to lock your bike, or a way to be locked to your vehicle, so they’re also relatively easy to steal.

Trunk racks vary greatly in quality, spending a bit more is worth it

Pros: Easy to fit and usually the least expensive option. Easy to remove, small and fold for easy storage.

Cons: Least secure way to haul bikes. If you don’t fit it right you can lose the lot when driving, and the bikes are easy to steal.

Dumbbell Racks and Stands

If you’re looking at free weights, you may want to consider purchasing one that comes with a dumbbell rack or a weight stand. This will help keep your weights off of the floor. Additionally, the rack can help you store your weights in an organized and efficient manner. It keeps them off the floor and out of your way.

If you’ve ever stubbed your toe on a weight, you’ll understand the reason to keep them up off the floor. It’s a good way to break your toe or foot. Not all dumbbells come with stands or racks. And, of course, the weights that do come with a rack cost a bit more. It may be worth the additional price if you value organization and you like to be able to easily find the right weight.

The Shape and Grip

However, 8th Gen processors are only available in the U series right now.

AMD Ryzen Mobile: A new set of chips that are designed to compete with Intel Core iand Core i7. 

AMD A, FX or E Series: Found on low-cost laptops, AMD’s processors — the company calls them APUs rather than CPUs —  provide decent performance for the money that’s good enough for web surfing, media viewing and productivity.

Intel Core m / Core i/ i”Y Series” — Low-power and low heat allow systems with these processors to go fanless. Performance is better than Celeron, but a notch below regular Core iU series.

Intel Xeon: Extremely powerful and expensive processors for large mobile workstations. If you do professional-grade engineering, 3D modeling or video editing, you might want a Xeon, but you won’t get good battery life or a light laptop. 

Don’t Skimp on Battery Life

If you’re buying large, bulky notebook that you’ll use only on a desk near an outlet, you don’t have to worry about battery life. However, if you plan to use the laptop on your lap, even if it’s at home and or work, you’ll want at least hours of endurance, with 8+ hours being ideal. The current iPad line-up

Apple currently sells four iPad models altogether, and each of those offers three or four colour options, one to three storage capacities, and the option to get Wi-Fi and cellular or just stick with Wi-Fi. The only model of iPad mini available is the iPad mini 4, and it’s only sold by Apple in 128GB versions. The Wi-Fi only model costs £419, while the cellular version will set you back £54- the same price as the cheapest 9.7-inch iPad Pro.

The 12.9-inch iPad Pro starts at at a punishing £769, but note that Apple has doubled the storage allocation for the iPad Pro models – so that money gets you a very decent 64GB. The top-end models come with 512GB, and for the 12.9-inch model that’ll set you back a dizzying £1,03and £1,16for the Wi-Fi and cellular versions. We’re getting into MacBook price territory (for comparison, the 13-inch MacBook Air starts at £949) and these models are clearly not for casual or budget-conscious buyers.

As we mentioned in the portability section, the larger iPad Pro is more something to consider as an alternative to a laptop. For these reasons it calls for more pre-purchase research, trying a sample out in an Apple Store and so on.

Colour options

We really like the iPad in gold, as we mentioned earlier – it’s quite bronze-like in its warmth – and the pink, while a bit of an opinion divider, is nowhere near as bold as that sounds. But grey or silver are the more conservative options.

Brake and Resistance System and Flywheel

The brake and resistance system and the weight of the flywheel are perhaps the most important factors to consider before purchasing an elliptical trainer because these systems control the durability of the trainer, overall feel of the machine, and how loud the machine will be when in operation. When looking for an elliptical trainer, look for machines with eddy current brake systems that use magnets to create resistance. Electronic magnetic resistance systems are the most common and also the smoothest type of brake and resistance system because there are essentially only three parts: the servo motor that moves the magnets into position, the magnets that create the resistance, and a computer board that signals the motor when to move the magnets. Electromagnetic brake systems allow users to control the resistance by simply pressing buttons on the console or handle bars, while manual brake systems use a tension knob that does not allow for an adjustable resistance level (though manual brake systems are quite rare now).  Because this system uses magnets on the flywheel to provide tension, the weight of the flywheel is also very important. Basic and standard trainers will have flywheel weights around 1pounds on average, but more elite trainers will have flywheel weights well over that, around 1pounds or more. The heavier the flywheel, the smoother every stride will be, but flywheel weights are not always posted, so be sure to ask about the flywheel weight if not posted.  Brands have multiple names for this type of brake and resistance system, some calling this “silent magnetic resistance” or a “quiet drive system.” Either way, look for this feature for the quietest operating machines that also creates a very smooth and natural feel.

Customizable Options

Customizable options are great if multiple people use the same elliptical trainer, but these options are also ideal in general for people who want to change things up or work multiple muscle groups. Possible customizable options include an adjustable stride, adjustable pivoting pedals, or an adjustable incline. Some trainers in the more elite category offer electronic or automatic adjustable incline based on built-in workout programs that automatically adjust based on the program and muscle groups being worked, but more standard trainers lack this feature. A customizable stride means that you can set the stride or length from front to back of trainer, shorter, usually at about 1inches, or longer, up to 2inches, depending on the brand and price point. Longer strides are ideal for taller people, while of course shorter strides are best for shorter people, but stride length variations can also be used when targeting specific muscle groups. Adjustable pedals are not offered on all trainers, but this feature is ideal if you can find it because the less you have to lift your foot to meet the motion of the stride, the less strain you put on your lower body. Some models even feature pedals that pivot with the natural stride motion of your legs. Fixed movement trainers are typically less expensive, but having the option to adjust several features on trainers make for a more comfortable and customizable experience.
